:icon_study: I plan on replacing the dash bulbs in my 73RR and was doing some reading on the subject from some past posts...I am curious about "dropping the steering column"...is that an involved process? Marla
For what is is worth Marla, I have never had to drop the column to change the bulbs, I can reach them all from behind...ok ya I don't have Hulk Hogan arms but they are getable.
AL
X2...i was going to tell you that earlier...i however do have hulk hogan arms and i can get to all of my bulbs....not easily ...but im sure youre not a 6-5 260 pound man either. if i can do it,,,you should have nooooooooo problem!
dropping the steering column to get to the instrument cluster makes removing the cluster to remove bulbs very easy and I recommend it for those who do not want to have a second profession as a contortionist.
see pics attached, there are two nuts (mounted to studs) and one bolt you will need to remove in order to lower your column. There is also a ground strap attached to one of those studs that will need to be removed in order for it to drop cleanly.
make sure when you remove your cluster that you pull it out slowly as some wires may get tangled and pull on each other, just take your time and you will be fine.
Yeah, sometimes those clips can be a pain. I've run into some old and brittle ones that were just not enjoying life. Man, I can say that about some people I've met.
Hi can you help out with how to remove the cluster once the column is dropped? I removed the 4 screws holding the woodgrain, but the bottom piece of the woodgrain is stuck. I dont want to force it and crack it. Is it secured by a pin or something? Do I stick a screwdriver in there?
Once the wood grain cover is off, how does the cluster come out?
I just removed my instrument cluster a few weeks ago. It was a PITA, but now that I know how to do it I could do it a lot easier now. There are a few screws that caused me fits, such as the one in the side of my oem radio, and a couple of the a/c attachments. If its just bulbs, I would try to just reach up behind, but at least one or two of the bulbs are very hard to get to that way, especially up above the a/c controls. Maybe just remove the controls to get to those bulbs.
Just firmly grab hold of the base of the bulb socket right where it contacts the back of the panel, slightly wiggle and pull. Some will pull out easier than others. With such tight spaces and mostly only able to get two fingers on them, leverage will be minimal but once you get the first out it gets easy.
The radio screw you mentioned - Which side is it on and where is it exactly? How do I access it? I was trying to remove the radio yesterday and something was holding it up. Thanks everyone for the help.
There is a small screw attached to the right side of the radio, only accessible when you remove the ashtray.
There is also the nut holding the same side in the rear. (The radio had a stud that attached to the radio bracket)
