It seems in my case they are necessary. I rebuilt the column after reading a post on here about using a $6 lower bearing. The cheap replacement does not have a beveled upper edge like the original . that bevel keeps the center tube centered & the shift collar straight. The new bearing edge is flat & simply butts against the tube end. The spacers are the only other thing to keep it all centered. No i know why those lower bearings are $90 !Unless you're doing an exact resto/100 point car, those spacers are not necessary. I was told that they were used for the production line workers to help them guide the shaft/tubes during assembly.
