I need to change the steering gear box in my '66 Satellite. What am I getting myself into? I believe I need to pull the steering column up to get the gear box out but how do I get the roll-pin out of the collar? Big hammer?? I don't want to destroy anything so I'm asking or help. It is manual steering also. Thanks for any advice.

i removed mine with a punch and a hammer, came right out without any problems

It helps if your engine had a valve cover leak, allowing oil to drip onto the coupler!
Dry coupler? Soak it with a good penetrant/lubricant and let it sit a few hours. THEN, find a metal punch about the same diameter. Have a pal hold the steering wheel STILL, then tap on the roll pin with the hammer and punch.
Lucky for you it is a manual steering chuck. Wrestling a P/S chuck out of a V8 car is a pisser.

the proper term for the tool you are looking for is a drift.it looks like a punch but it is round with a flat end.try to find one the size of the pin.you do not have to pull the column, the coupler slides up far enough to pull the box.only other things are the 3 bolts and the pitman.bolts can be tough to get to,just take your time.just to mention it,the coupler has rebuild kits available for about 20 bucks and it would be a great investment to do that while it is easy to get to.

Ugh, does the steering column need to be loosened/dropped to pull the power steering box if the engine is out?

That coupler will slide up the steering column shaft to give clearance to remove the box.
It has an area in it to allow this.
I don't know of any reason to have to mess with the column at all.
I made a "drift" when I was pulling a lot of junk yard boxes.
Welded the proper sized bolt onto a long shaft to knock the roll pin out.
No reason other than to make it easy to reach over the fenders.
You will find a master spline among the splines in it when you get it off the box.
Note that for reassembly.
TIP!
Back the coupler up with a big hammer or something heavy when you knock on the roll pin the first time if it's hard to get out.
It will absorb the impact and the pin will move better.
Otherwise your UPPER bearing in the box and your column are taking the impact.

The other posters have kind of covered it already... BUT I would highly suggest that you... Get a Factory Service Manual, for your specific year & make or model car, it will have most all the information, you will usually ever need, unless your doing a bunch of aftermarket modifications, then it will still be "a great reference/guide book" anyway...

Sir, I did both of mine this year, and it depends on power steering or manual A power box weighs 39lbs, and has to be removed from the bottom of the car. I have to unbolt the column to get it to back off the male end of the box. I can't recall if the 66 have a collapsible collar but if it does be careful not to brake it.
