I'm wantin to piece together a sound system for my shop. I had my PC out there......but somehow it bit the dust. May it RIP. Anyway, I have a Sony 5 disc changer/receiver combo that's 600 watts RMS and it says use 6 ohm speakers. I HAVE some 8 ohm speakers. Would it hurt to use them? Do I have to use 6 ohm speakers? Any input is appreciated.

a part number would help...maybe a pic too. :poke:

it aint gonna hurt nothin', you may/may not get a little bit of hum if you really crank it. but it should work fine. hook it up and see!!! just don't crank the **** out of it off the bat...

Here's what I know about this. The lower impedance speakers typically require more power to run, or better put, they are paired with a high current amp. But when used on a system that calls for a higher impedance load you may damage the amp. What you propose to do is the reverse so I seriously doubt you will damage anything. You may not get the full sound quality out but it should work well enough without letting the smoke out.

You won't have a problem, Rusty. You also won't have 600 watts because of the increased resistance. Probably won't be able to tell the difference anyway, so try out what you already have.

I used to run a 100 watt 4 ohm car amp with my vintage JBL 50 watt 8 ohm home speakers.

It was almost a perfect match. Ran that way for years.

If it's rated for 6 ohms, that just means do not go lower than that. If you were to go with 4 ohm car speakers, the lower resistance would pull more current and toast that amp after a while. The 8 ohm speaker will actually draw less current because of its higher resistance, which will cause the amp have a bit less volume, and be just fine.

Depending on your music selection you may pollute the air. If your planning on blairing Usher your stereo will not pass the standard. If you play some Molly Hatchet or Ram Jam you will be environmentally friendly.

This is what I have. It's a Sony AVD-K800P. I have a 6 ohm subwoofer already. I may just wait and get 6 ohm surround speakers. That sounds like the best thing to do. Thanks yall.

Hey Rob, I have a bunch of spare PC's that I have repaired if you are in need of one. Maybe you remember seeing them when you were here. I have them hooked up to the internet and my tv. and my sound systems. We finally got rid of the dish and d-tv, got tired of paying almost $90 a month to watch re-runs and commercials. Now we watch Netflix for $7.99 with out all the adds. And I have found no way to beat the music that is ready available on the internet for free. We also pay the $28 a year charge to (http://www.tvandvideoguide.com/guide/) that will give you more places to see your favorite stuff than you can actually have time to view. Check it out.

Can you get "Game of Thrones" on that tvguide.com? I'd if the woman can go without that show. Lol. But yeah that sounds a lot better than my direct TV bill..

Just to be nit-picky, you don't refer to the Ohm rating of speakers as resistance. It's impedance. The speaker has a coil and not a pile of carbon to resist the flow of current.

How much do you want to spend? I have some excellent 6 ohm surround speakers for sale since I upgraded. They're NHT: two 2.5i floor standing, two 1.5 surrounds, and an AC1 center channel. PM me your email and I'll send you manuals with pictures.

Right now, I need to spend as little as possible. I almost feel like I need to pay you just for tellin me about those things. lol
