I was out this evening on one of our local side roads, testing and tuning the 67 Belvedere. So Ive got one foot on the brake, one on the gas bring up the revs not too much, maybe 1500 RPM, let go and the thing is a dog. When I press on the brakes the pedal is rock hard, and the rear shoes are dragging.
Once I press once or twice it lets go and I'm on my way.

Any suggestions on what I should look for?

Look at your wheel cylinders.. check the seals to see if they are cocked out a little.

I'm no expert, but in some master cylinders, there is a "residual pressure valve" just inside the side ports where the brake lines connect. Their purpose is to maintain SOME pressure in the brake line in an effort to have a head start for faster brake action.
If your master cylinder has these tiny valves and they fail, either the brakes drag or they react slower than normal.

pull apart your drums and take a look.shoes slide on the backing plate and can start to stick if not lubed back there for long periods of time.you should be able to slightly move your shoes back and forth with the drums off with no sticking.also check for any damaged springs or hardware.

Also, over time the shoes wear ridges into the spots where they touch on the backing plate, it its the case clean up the spots with a gringer and tube them up. Should do the trick

Thanks guys, Im going to pull it apart and take a look this weekend.
