Right now when I run at the strip, I just take off my air cleaner and run without. I've got a Holley 850 DP with the choke horn milled off. I don't have enough hood clearance to run a decent-sized air cleaner. I was thinking about running a stub stack with no air cleaner. The claims are another 40 cfm of flow but I've been searching forums and some say they help, some say they make their carbs act up. Any experiences with them here? Thanks!

tryed running one on a couple of diff cars.only work ok if you have plenty of hood clearance and dont really need them anyhow.with tight clearance, like yours, had nothing but trouble.i would say dont bother.

It wouldn't cost anything to try running with just the air cleaner base plate by itself. It will help smooth out the intake flow like the stub stack you're thinking of.

Dumb question, how do I keep the base plate from flopping around?

u shape a coat hanger wire and put a loop in the middle to go over the carb stud, hold down with nut.make sure to keep the loop about an inch or so above the air horn so as not to interfere with the air flow.free lock down!

Another dumb question, how am I attaching the hanger to the base plate?

lol,you dont have to,the hanger will push down against the pan and be held in place by the nut on the carb stud.

I am not a fan of running with no air cleaner, even before using my currant SV1 carbs. With a good high flow filter, there's not much of a difference with or without it on.Also helps to retain flame:icon_hang:

Just wondering is your base a standard one or a drop base? Of its a standard get a drop base which will add clearance to run a big taller filter.

It's a Moroso drop base, but with my Performer RPM intake and 1/2" carb spacer (can't even fit a 1" carb spacer) I can't run a tall air filter and still close the hood.

This will all be solved as soon as I get around to putting the tunnel ram I picked up on it. :headbang:

Remember,,,,,measure twice,cut once:blob1:

If I remember correctly you were saying you were going to a S/S scoop or asking about them some time back... if you use just the air ceaner base & have a hole on the hood for the hood scoop, make sure to rubber or foam seal the air-cleaner base to the underside of hood, to still get the ram air effect, from your scoop... if not just ignore this post.... if you don't have any clean fresh cool dense air going to the carb, your giving up some free HP, by sucking hot engine compartment air into the carburetor/engine...

IMHFO a K&N Xtreem Air Filter element & top w/guaze type air filter {or other brand gauze filter} is better than going with out anything at all.... with very little restriction if any... they flow way better like 40%-50% better or more, than a paper air filter...
