did you just deduce that 69 or have you seen documentation on that. chrysler badged the gtx as such to designate it as one of their cars that could possibly be a hemi car in 67. i did several searches for the name origin but came up empty handed
It was something I heard years ago. Might have been while hanging with Jerry Stein, Ron Mancini, and Jack Werst at the track, or a conversation with Galen. Might have come to me in a drunken stupor. I don't remember.
Whitey, this is a really interesting question. From what I remember hearing (and this was a long time ago), it stood for: Grand Tourisme Extra. I think some would say that Tourisme is spelt Tourismo as in Pontiac GTO: Gran Turismo Omologato (which also refers to some Ferrari models as well). BTW: Pontiac also had a "Grand Touring Option" package. I don't know if it was ever available on a GTO (as in: a GTO with a GTO).
The only time I have heard Xperimental used was for the AMX: American Motors Xperimental (or eXperimental). I was thinking that it was also applied to the Buick GSX as well but I think that was: Gran Sport eXtra (which led to the modern day GNX: Grand National eXtra).
That was pretty fun thinking of all those after so much time.
BTW: Did you folks know that the GTX was the original "Boss"? There's a story. I just wish I could remember all of it. ;)
Kind of like the short lived HP2 on early Hemi powered Plymouth B bodies.
The rumor has been around for a long time that when other car lines were using letters to identify their new hipo models Plymouth followed suit and want to use GT but Ford had already been using it on the Mustang. So they whent through the entire alphabet until they found somthing that they liked the sound of to follow the GT and it really has no meaning.
