hi guys,

i have a 1963 Savoy, with the "old" type rear axle; i want to swap the original 741 non-suregrip case for a later type 489 with suregrip; can i use both of the axles or do they need shortening or adapting to the newer 489 casing?

thanks!

The "chunk" should swap out fine, but you're gonna need a puller and some reading time with those pre-1965 pressed in axles. You might think about swapping the whole axle. I think there's a mod on the web to make it less of a pain when it's time for shoes if you decide to keep the pressed ones.

it's a problem to find a complete "newer" axle, as i live in the Netherlands.
So, if i understand right, the 489 chunk should fit in fine? ( sorry for asking, my english isn't perfect )

thanks!

yes will fit, just need the tool to pull the axles as the earlier diff had pressed in axles i beleive the newer one did not

Heres something i,ve heard, not sure if its true or not. I,ve heard you can back the axle nuts off some and drive the car in slow figure 8s and it will loosen the drums so you can get them off. From what i understand the drums are whats swedged.

thats a tried and true in the field method... buy or borrow the tool if your keeping the car. if you or freind is visiting west coat of fla i have one for a tube of the caviar/salmon stuff. mmm for that matter i have a complete 64 rear that has the hub conversion just done. 742 case open unknown gearing too. don't know what i want for that . have a $100+ in the new drums/rebuilt brakes no more tool needed, not that it would be worth shipping to netherlands even at free. get the tool and think about doing the conversion http://www.plymouthbulletin.com/rearbrakes.htm join and bookmark this http://www.1962to1965mopar.ornocar.com/techstuff.html

thanks to you all; a friend of mine borrowed me his get-nasty-drum-off-tool, so that will be an easy fix.
I am gonna jump into the conversionstuff, that's for sure. The car is going into the paintbooth in a short while, so i have got the time to sort things out.

Here is an article that will eaze drum removal in the future.A friend of mine has done it and if done with a cutter he saved the old drums.Hope this will help.

thanks all!
i rebuilt the axle, and trying to fit the original 2 axles into the axletubes, into the 489 casing; at one side the axle pops in perfectly, and the outer bearingedge is flush with the axlehousing ( and ready for the backingplate )
on the otherside, the axle also popped in easily, but the outer bearingshell is approx. 0.15 inch out of the axlehousing, so not flush.
Can i fix this with some extra shims? Or..
do i need to get the axle deeper in? Or..
is there something wrong with the lenghts of the axles?

thanks!

I remember pulling the hubs off my 64 Dodge after the brake shoes came apart. My buddy came up with a large puller so we got the nut off, put the puller on and heated the center of the hub with a torch. We put lots of pressure on the puller while heating. Nothing, wouldn't even budge. So we took a break for a beer and some bullshitting. While we were standing there, all of a suddern there was a loud bang and the puller and hub were laying on the floor. We repeated the operation for the other side! No more flanged axles for me.

Hi Marcel-Check your 741 open rear and look at the axle spacer block,if it is square versus round then the axles will be too long for the 489 sure grip rear. You can spot it between the axle and spider gears.
