Synthetic Gear Oil in a 833?

Anyone have experience with using AMSOIL Severe Gear (or any other synthetic) in an 833 4 speed?

Hot Rod is saying they have seen good results with it. However, I know that AMSOIL is a sponsor of theirs so it might just be an advertising statement.

The reason I ask about AMSOIL is because it has performed well in my motor oil applications.

Just buy a high quality brand.. Castrol, Pennzoil, Drydene, Valvoline...Etc....

I won't say that I "know it all" but I am an automotive chemical scientist (including gear lubes & oils). I would run a synthetic gear lube in my A-833, but I don't think you need to spend the extra money.

"Conventional" gear lubes & oils come out of the ground as a HUGE mixture of oil-type chemicals. Crude oil is "cracked" to make an oil-type chemical mixture. Let's say, 100 oil-type chemicals mixed together. Let's say that 80 of those chemicals are good lubricants, 10 of them are really good lubricants and 10 of them can form engine sludge (or transmission sludge) if not changed per the service manual.

"Synthetic" gear lubes & oils are molecules that are literally "built" from natural gas. You can control the mixture of oil-type chemicals you get because you're building your own. I've never run a natural gas reactor, but I'm sure the people that do don't intentionally make any of the "sludge forming 10" oil-type chemicals.

On a related note, I got 250,000 miles on an engine that I ONLY ran the cheapest no-name brand of conventional oil in. I change my oil like clockwork. When I cracked the engine open, it looked like new.

Long story short....be honest with yourself. If you plan to change your transmission gear lube every couple of years, go cheap and use conventional. If you know you'll never drain/re-fill, spend the extra money and go synthetic. Just my opinion.

I had a very have a hard time finding GL4. After much searching I was only able to find 85/90 GL4 at Napa. Everyone else carried GL5.

Pennzoil sycromesh is what I use, my unlce and my buddy. Our 4 speeds have no issues with it.

I rebuilt my trans last year. I put Redline MT-90 GL4 synthetic in it. Good stuff.

Symthetic oil sometimes causes leaks around where cluster gear shaft goes into the the case of an 833.mistakenly looks like your rear main engine seal is leaking when its actually its your Trans

There are reports that synthetics cause leaks. I have never had this happen. I use it in everything I own the 69 and modern Mopars too. Amsoil and Mobil1 are the only true synthetics. All others start with conventional oil. Part of the additive package in Amsoil includes a chemical that helps to prevent them from drying out like Mobil1 can.

I've had Amsoil in a 66 hemi since 2009. No problems whatsoever.

That is right, and they will tell you GL 5 replaced the Gl 4... I question why Brewers recommend the GL4, but that's what I use....................MO
