Tachometer Mounting Locations

I have a 65 Belvedere that has a coulmn mount tachometer. It stays loose and blocks all instrumentation. I would like to move it to possibly the top of the dash, like the A 990's location or possibly somewhere else. Any advise or how to install on the dash would be greatly appreciated. The dash in this car is near perfect and I wouldn't want to ruin it. Thanks for any help.

You might have to make a wrap around bracket that picks up some screw holes from some place else on the dash. Or remove the pad and slip a bracket under it and tie it to the pad studs somehow. You'd want to add some sort of foot print under the tach (center of mass) to keep it from bouncing. Just thinking out loud here....

Just put a shift-light in. Don't need a tach except to see your idle speed.

Here my column install on a 66 Belvedere I column shift. I made an aluminum foot to mount the tach mount too, then some thin foam between the aluminum foot and column. It stays put for now.

I put mine on the A-pillar and it worked out well.... I can see it without looking down

Just get a smaller tach, like 2" or 2-5/8", put it in an autometer gauge cup and strap it to the column toward one side. It won't block a thing.

having gone thru this with my '65 coronet i can say that there isn't a good solution. the way the steering column is situated in relation to the instrumentation is the problem. my '69 r/t will allow for a 3 3/4" tach on the column but the '65 won't, even with a special bracket i fabbed, without interfering with the instrumentation or dash knobs. the only "solution" i see is the bracket i made with a 2 5/8" tach that my 66 yr old eyes would struggle with. moving the column in and out helps slightly but for now i just tossed the 3 3/4" tach.

That could easily be put in the dash cluster... to replace a clock delete... the big tach usually ends up on the dash... with the wire or cable down the defrost vent.. the console was a factory place and mounted to the bottom lip of the dash could work... some put it on the cowl or hood the coloum can be a pain with the newer cheap clamps that want to break... nos ideal made in Brooklyn ny are the good ones.. tagging a few together.. for what its worth

Thanks guys...I appreciate the help. I'm just not wild about where it's located and would like to be able to dash mount it like the A990's but I don't know how they did it and kept it solidly mounted. Thanks again.
