Temp guage

Can I use either one of these for a mechanical temp guage.

The one on the left "brass with caps" would be your best bet. The other is the radiator hose connection. Pretty sure they don't have one for that. Unless you are talking about the one with the blue plug in it. Typically they are more under the compressor. And its a smaller sender.

Remove the pipe plug to the left of the T-stat housing and use sender that came with your gauges. Not a very good pic but here's mine.

Yes, both of those will work. The old sensor location is your best bet. If that pump is old that pipe plug may not come out at all without taking the threads with it.
 
Size of your mechanical sensor threads will likely make the case for the location.
 
I was able to get the blue pipe plugs, just left of your thermostat, out on my car. I run my mechanical gauge in that hole & still have the factory gauge hooked up with the "L" push-on connector in BeepBeepRR's picture. In my case, the mechanical sending unit was maybe 1" deep & only had enough clearance in that hole. The necessary adapters came with my gauge.

Is the old sensor considered a electrical one then ? So I need to buy a electrical Autometer gauge not a mechanical correct ?
 
If you want to keep the factory one leave that sender in and you can add either a mechanical or electrical aftermarket in the other hole.

IMO, Like Halifaxhops, I'd keep the stock electric if it's working and add the mechanical. Most, I'm thinking, would trust a mechanical over electric. Ultimately up to you.

My thinking was if I cant get the plug out it's been in there for 43 years then plan B would be to do the other sensor just curious about that.

Are you running a mechanical fan or electrical
 
Question if electrical fan where do you hook up the sensor if you already have both ports used up.
 
Next dump question is the flow of coolant from the top to down or down to up.
 
That's what i thought but am curious who thinks electrical over mechanical is better. So now you have stock gauge and a mechanical gauge. Good to know thanks

No I haven't installed a mechanical one yet but that's the plan.
 
Personally I like a quality electrical gauge, just easier to hook up and blend in to the compartment.
 
I get what your saying. Blending into what you got is best. I have seen them in the glove box also in the console and seen one guy had them on a hinge under the dash so when it was parked he could flip them up to hide them.
