Hi MOPAR brain trust,
In short, I have a check ball in the Valve Body that I'm not sure belongs. I am putting together a VB for a TF727 transmission. The transmission is date coded January 1975. and the VB has the little clock/pie chart cast in it with the number 75 on it.

I split the valve body and removed the usual check balls.
I removed the separator plate and in the transfer plate is a check ball. According to my Chrysler supplied diagram, this check ball is for the rear clutch pack on trans. with lock-up converters. Being a 1975 transmission, it obviously is not a lock-up unit.

Should the check ball be there in my 1975 trans.?

I have put together a '75 727 tranny a couple of years ago and I don't recall any check balls being in the transfer plate.

Each shift kit should have a diagram and it will tell you which balls to keep and which to change and which to omit... depending on year or application it will be different... I would look for a diagram of a kit for 727/904 that covers 68-79 and see what it looks like it would be more universal... a lock up body and a non lock up may use the same port for different purposes... the size of the ball matters also...

The transGo 1 instructions make no mention at all of a check ball in the transfer plate.
The instructions do cover the lock-up years. (I think the instructions are applicable for '68-79.)
The TransGo diagram for check balls only shows the usual 5 balls, 1/4" , One 11/32 , and one 3/8".
A Chrysler diagram does show a ball in the transfer plate for Lockup models. '77 and up.
My Chrysler diagrams for non-lock up , part throttle kickdown VB's does not show a check ball in the transfer plate. Right now, I'm looking at the various hydraulic flow charts and am trying to determine if that ball is just for lock up units or could be in other units. If Chrysler put it there, I"ll just leave it. I'm just not certain whether or not somebody has been inside this tranny before and incorrectly installed the ball.

That's beyond me.... if it looks like it has been in there a while from the wear on the seat maybe it belongs.... if no seat maybe a mistake.... it's hard to lean either way but the info says no ball... I would go that way...

I am sure the unit you are working on has been open before so with that said anything is possible you can have lock up parts in the case. a lockup VB will have a "Z" tube which connects the VB to the lock up module.
there is a check ball in the seperator plate regardless of lock up or non lock up
I attached some pics hope this helps.
depending on shift kit a check ball may be omitted
