I'm talking about wicked people full of the devil who take advantage of the elderly; our grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, sisters and brothers. God bless the store clerk and the responding Police officer who stepped up to help this old lady.

This can go on unchecked because people tend to keep their finances private from friends and family before their mental decline is noticeable and you are able to get power of attorney over their finances. Even if the old folks aren't mentally declining with age they are not skeptical enough to prevent getting ripped off by greedy scammers. So, all you can do is talk with the elderly about how scammers take advantage of trusting people of their generation.

Good media reference here is the Jason Statham movie The Beekeeper.

These scum would not do these deeds if they were not successful. Please discuss this with all family and friends to avoid any risk of something of this nature happening to those we care about.

this is why I have my mother's banking app and login on my devices. I don't "snoop"...but check in every month or so to make sure nothing out of the ordinary is going on (or, more to the point, going OUT).

I got an email the other day about "elder abuse" and "your social security number has been suspended due to activity we discovered during a search". I'll get right on contacting them, and giving them all my personal information.... Fortunately mom is still sharp enough that she'll send me stuff like that when she gets it, along with some laugh emojis and a few "how dumb do they think I am?" to go with them.

But I still worry.

Agreed need to hang them high but most are hiding somewhere else.. I hate that! I’d love the privilege of hunting them down.

One can only hope that some twist of fate will leave these scammers to live the rest of their lives in agonizing, debilitating pain, and they will live a very long life.

as terrible as this is, even worse is the frequency that adults are stealing from their elderly parents. My wife works in banking and see this all the time.

Even worse are these hacker groups who lock up companies computer networks and demand huge ransoms. They’ve done that to some hospitals, even partially shut down a big children’s hospital in Chicago a few months ago, delaying treatments and surgeries even. Some kids might even have died due to those evil scumbags.
My mom is 90 and seems pretty sharp still, and has a good financial planner and family looking after her. She tells me about some scammers who’ve tried to contact her. I am getting ready to retire and worry about my own situation as I don’t have kids to look after me. I’m a fairly cynical person, a social critic, and typically suspicious of everyone’s motivations but worry that if I live into my 80s and 90s, will I let my guard down, or still have my “don’t know you, don’t trust you, don’t have patience for you, so eff off!” attitude I’ve had most of my life?

I have one child who would likely rob me blind if she had any control over my finances. With this in mind, my wife and I weighed other late life options early on. A major selling point of the facility where I have a deposit was my former teacher, who is a resident, outlining the fact that the financial structure created a no disbursement environment, with auto pay for everything. My dad set up a similar arrangement with another facility a generation ago, primarily to eliminate the need to pay bills, even though he was still in great physical and mental shape.

When my dad was in assisted living, they would have hair dressers come in, he would get a haircut once a month. It was supposed to be 15 or 20 bucks. I saw a couple of transactions for about $65. Turns out he was tipping the lady that much. My wife tore her a new one.

Valid issue! Place where I have my deposit permits no tipping. Gratuities are paid as a percentage at year's end, debit from resident's maintenance account.

My mom lives in assisted living, I don’t think they manage residents bill paying and such there though. Her financial planner helps manage some finances but she stresses more and more when it comes to getting her records together for the accountant to do taxes, and recently she hired some consultant who isn’t cheap to manage keeping her medications organized and on hand. I guess when you have a dozen+ prescriptions that gets hard to keep track of!
It sucks getting old, pondering my pending retirement has got me depressed even though money doesn’t seem like it will be an issue for me.
My mom still drives at 90 but it’s about time for her to give up her keys. That might be what gets me off the fence to finally retire, as I’ll need to help her more when she can’t drive.
