I picked up a couple cheap TQs at the Webster swap meet today, a real clean one for $40 and a dirty and somewhat rusty one for $20, but it had obviously been run recently.

One is either a 9245 or 9248. Guess I need to find out which 79 318(?) or 79 440. I can't read the numbers on the other one, except for a "3 8 8 " on the rear flange wall.

I read elsewhere that the later ones don't do too well on applications they weren't designed for, but that they could be "converted" to be tunable like the earlier ones.

Anyone know what's involved to do this?

I think he is selling it as a service, so there's not a lot of details.

I ran one on a stock 318 years ago and it did well. The one feature I liked was the adjustable metering rod hanger. The plastic fuel bowl supposed to keep the gas cooler and that can really be a benefit with today's crappy ethanol spiked swill.

My intended use is a slightly moded 74 318 with headers and performer intake.
It's currently running a 4106 (or whatever the 600 w/ electric choke is).
I thought it would be an interesting comparison, plus I need the Eddy carb for my other 318 in the 66.

I thought if somebody knew what to do (like drilling the idle screw acess, or changing or swapping something), or a quick overview ofwhat the problems may be.....

OF the 2 you have, does one have smaller primaries over the other one?

The smaller primary TQ was used on 340 cars, some 360 cars. The 318 didn't get a 4bbl. carb til late in the game which would make it a smogger carb.

You will want a smaller primary TQ for a 318. Keep the ones you have now for tuning parts and maybe bowl replacement should the need arise. Heat is a major issue with longevity and these carbs. Use a thick gasket, not the paper thin ones.
