Turns out that a brave student charged the gunman and helped prevent a worse result - and lost his life in the process.

WAYNESVILLE - Tami Hunter held back tears as her 4-year-old-son Maddox sat on her lap watching the long procession of police and emergency vehicles drive down Main Street, toward Wells Funeral Home.

Like hundreds of others on the morning of May 2, Hunter came to say goodbye to Riley Howell, a former Waynesville resident, who has become a national figure, a hero who sacrificed his life in an attempt to disarm a gunman and save others during the April 30 campus shooting at UNC Charlotte.

Her son held a sign.

"A man we never met is now a hero we will never forget."

Thanks for posting. This is why I love our dog more than most people!
