Just took apart an early 18 spline for my 66 HEMI car and found this mess. I didn't pay much for the core so I'm not complaining, but geez, this is pretty screwed up!! Fortunately I have extra parts and can get what I need from Passon to get it into top shape. The input bearing cage broke apart and sent pieces all over and apparently one got caught in the gear teeth. I'd say lack of oil and high speed was the start of this disaster.

You didn't pull the cover and look inside before you bought it? That's a must on a manual transmission......:banghead:

Ouch....if they are cheap enough, I won't pull the cover off either.

I sure did and saw the chipped tooth right away. I could also hear each ball drop as I turned the input, which without seeing it I knew the ball retainer was missing. The chipped tooth must have happened as the ball retainer pieces got caught in the gear teeth. What I couldn't see were the square cluster gear needles. I have parts so what I was really after was the case and that seems fine so far. Anyway, I didn't think $300.00 for a date correct case with some good parts was so bad.
