The 1963 Dodge that I purchased came with some interesting work already done to it. It will be a real pain in the azz to remove it all BUT I am pretty sure that it helped to preserve the car and sheet metal.

The black that you see is "Bed Liner" and its been on there for 10 years or more. Both the engine compartment and the trunk floor were sprayed with it. I have already removed most of what was in the trunk because I found a loose area and just started lifting it from there. The sheet metal under the liner in the trunk is like new with no rust.

The engine compartment may be tougher due to the heat but I have already located a place below the master cylinder that was loosened by brake fluid. It can be removed with stripper so if it comes to that I will have to do it. The engine will have to come out as will everything in the engine compartment.

Man, I know how you feel. The guy I bought my car from sprayed the whole engine compt with, I don't know what the heck it is... it's black, you can't sand or grind it off, heat makes it gooey, and brake cleaner/B12 will disolve it if you have 40 cans, 600 rags and a year to do it. The only thing I can think of is to sand blast it off. I tried to get it off and no luck, so I used Rustoleum and rattlecanned the eng compt a hammered black finish.

It sucks... but somehow I think yours might be worse. Thank you! haha

Actually you can have it Soda Blasted or as stated above you can use stripper. When I open the hood I want to see body color...not Bed Liner.:icon_oak:

I wish for that too, but the car was white, got painted light blue and the eng compt was given this coat of black goo.

This is what mine will have to look like until I can afford to do a real rebuild (probably never).

It really doesn't take that long to strip the engine compartment with a braided cup wire wheel on an angle grinder. It takes off the worst crap you can think of! One weekend and I had my firewall, inner fenders and core support done! Oh yeah, it was a really nasty teal green/rust in most areas!

I'm further along than this photo and things like valvecovers have changed but you get the idea.

It will remain the flat black primer until I shake down the car and blow it apart for final paint. I still need to replace the nasty looking relay but for now it's a known good piece that works.

That looks awesome!! Wish mine looked like that.

I have tried the wire wheel and it only seemed to 'heat up' the concoction and not really strip it. It's like cosmoline mixed with dark caramel or something like that. lol I dunno...

I wish I knew what it was, it's black in color but looks very dark brown when I use Berryman's B12 to dissolve it and wipe it off with a rag. It needs blasting, I'm pretty sure.

Man, this needs to be in the 'dumb stuff....' thread! I hate spray in bed liner....even hate it in the bed of a pickup!

Seems like a lot of our '62-'65 cars have black engine compartments - mine does as well. Kind of interesting since they're supposed to match the rest of the body.

good luck with the cleanup. I was fortunate enough that the engine bay on my 64 was untouched by stupid people. It still retains the original white body color.

Love the wagon, Max!

If it was just paint it would be no problem but bed liner is a different thing all together. Sand blasting won't take it off nor will a wire wheel but patience and some care will get er done.

I got luck as well, all body color!!!!
