i just striped out the treads on my last bolt on my intake when i was checking my intake bolts due to a possible air leak is there a good n easy way to fix this with out removing head n intake i was thinking helicoil but never had to use one yet.... n do they work n last if any one has any ideas plz let me know and all the intake bolts were lose idk how that is possible when i always check n double check my torque on my builds??? its a aluminum intake do they come lose or what would cause this? thanks again pat

Yeah, they loosen up after hot and cold cycles. If you stripped an intake to head bolt, its the head that needs to be repaired. Heli coils work. Time serts wore another alternative. Slightly more expensive and harder to find, but probably a more solid repair. Not that i have ever had a heli coil fail. They just suck to put in sometimes.

easier option is to drill and tap a bigger hole maybe next size up and put a slightly larger bolt in, i know not as pretty as helicoil but alot easier.

thanks beno i do need to get all these small bugs out i did thinks of that though but i have all arp hardware in engine where do intake bolts go into water jacket or any place serious and what grade bolt should i use n how long should they be on a edelbrock intake? i would like to do it wright though good thing its a back bolt not as noticable just hope this fixes my leak so i can get carbs adjusted n timing set any one know what i should set timing at for comp cam 509 lift cam card dont tell me nothing????

Heli Coil only works if you use a flat bottom tap meant for heli coil. Go to Fastenal for this or a time serts. Remember water jacket issues depending which thread it is.

Check www.timecert.com. going to a bigger bolt is also an option if you dont mind doing that. A tip for setting timing. Once its back together, run it til full operating temp. Set the timing up 2 degrees. Shut it off and let it heat soak for a couple minutes. Then start it up. If it turns over and starts ok, bump the timing up another 2 degrees. Then shut it down for a couple of minutes. Repeat this until the engine cranks hard. Once you reach the point where the engine is hard to turn over, back the timing off 2 degrees. Not sure what dizzy you have, but you will need to limit the mechanical advance so the total timing is not too high. Dont worry about this so much right now, get the bolt holes squared away. Once thats done, then we can get it dialed in. Good luck

Easy fix. Pull the intake. Go to any Napa Auto Parts and buy a 3/8" X 18 coarse thread heli-coil kit. Put rags in the valley to catch any shavings. The right drill bit and tap comes in the kit. Drill the hole to size. Use the tap to cut new threads. Use red lock-tite on the heli-coil insert and thread it in with the tool provided. Use a small punch to break off the tang and you're done. Comes with directions which are very easy to follow. This way years down the road you won't have a mechanic saying nasty things about you...lol

Sometimes you can use a longer bolt and put a lock nut with some locktite on the inside of the head for a fix until you are ready to pull the intake and/or head to fix the right way (threaded insert of some sort).

its the back drivers side can u do it w/o removing the intake? the torque is 40 ftlbs right thats what my book said?

This what I would do. Also none of the bolts on a BB go into the water jacket. Exhaust do but not intakes. They do get wet with oil so use some sealer on them.

coloradodave is right on. Just remember, since the intake holes are not blind, you need to wait for the locktite to cure completely before assembly. Usually 24 hours. Failure to do this and your intake bolt will back the heli coil out with it the next time you disassemble.
