Hi all,
I have a 1967 383 and a TCI torque converter.
I have a flex plate that fits the converter but the bolt holes are oval shape.
Has anyone seen flex plates with oval holes?
I also purchased ARP flex plate bolts but they have small bolt heads but mopar bolts have large heads.

The bolt holes are round. You need a new flex plate. Think about how a oval hole would work. It wouldn't.
 
^^^ yup the holes are ovaled the same way any bolt hole would get ovaled
 
The weird thing is that the holes look like they were machined that way. Pretty much perfect with no sign of ware or damage.

Would someone machine the bolt holes into slots so they don't have to worry about clocking it to the converter? Just throwing something at the wall to see if it sticks. :jackoff:
 
The flex plate is either right or it isn't. No holes were any shape but round. Done deal.

There is always a village idiot in the crowd that would.
 
Are the oval holes ovaled from the center outward? If so it might have been done to accomodate the large and small converter bolt pattern. If they are ovaled radialy it needs to be replaced.

If that was done it is totally wrong. Who cares why it was done wrong. Just get the right parts and do it right.

Wheels have been ovaled to acommodate two different bolt patterens (Crager is one). All the holes do is line it up. Clamp load of the fastener is what holds them in posistion. If it was machined properly from the C/L outward it wouldn't matter.

With the use of studs. Not shouldered bolts. Special bolts and oval washers. Not at all the same. I have never seen a flex plate with oval holes. Have you? I didn't think so.
 
Clamp load is clamp load either way. The bolt or the stud is not there to provide contact for rotation. Especially in this case. You would never want to drive a thread against a hole regardless of hole shape.
