69' GTX, no bezel, no A/C, with consol. Need tips on getting the AM thumbwheel radio removed.

welcome! slide on over to the welcome wagon when you get a chance!

you have to drop it out the back. iirc, there are 4 screws in the front that hold it to the dash, unscrew those and slowly work down behind the dash.

good luck!

I think 2 - 7/16 bolts through the dash frame and a nut-stud supporting the back. Drops out the back.

Yep, sounds the same as our Sport Satellite's AM thumbwheel radio. I was putting it back in yesterday, and yes it's 2x screws at the front, (behind the fascia) and 1x nut at the back, towards the passenger's side.

We've still got all the seats out so it's not too bad laying on yer back and looking up under the dash, but you'll need to be a contortionist if you still have the front seats in!

And here's the one I'm referring to, out of the car, just after we'd had it converted to AM/FM/Stereo/MP3 etc

Alright, I'm curious also, where (who) did you have the conversion done. Maybe a peek inside the cover? I'm in the planing stages myself. I've done similar conversions before but this will be my first thumbwheel with usb, mp3,etc.

Hi there, sorry, just seen these replies!

We got ours done over here in England but originally got the idea from an article in Hemmings Muscle Machines that I read a couple of years ago.

That was an article about a guy that repairs/restores/converts original radios, who is based in New York, if memory serves.

I think I have a couple of links to companies on my work computer, so I'll post those when i get back to work tomorrow :icon_thumleft:

Sorry Smyythe68, dont really fancy taking it apart to look inside, knowing my luck (& electronics knowledge - or lack of) it wouldnt go back together again and/or it wouldnt work properly.

Havent even got power to it yet so i dont fancy cocking it up before we've even used it :icon_lol:

This is the website I found that led me to the company over here that I eventually used to convert our radio:
http://www.radiosforoldcars.com/

And see here for a local dealer that can do the work:
http://www.radiosforoldcars.com/dealerslookupF.htm

looks like there's plenty to choose from.

Cant find any info saved on my computer for that place in New York that was featured in Hemmings Muscle Machines so I'll see if I can dig out the magazine and scan the article :icon_wink:
