Hey Guys,

I have an easy one for ya. Where is the timing mark on the engine on a stock 1970 383 (Roadrunner)? I know I need to look for the mark on the harmonic balancer, but where is the other "marker" that I line that up against?

Anyone have a picture?

Thanks...

When looking at the front of the car, the timing tab would be at the 10 o'clock position, and located behind the balancer. It's about an inch and a half long.

There should be a hole in the center of the tab, which is TDC. Timing at 2 lines under the zero should get you in the ballpark for a stock engine.

I like to mark the tab and balancer with white paint. That makes the marks easy to see with a timing light.

Thanks gents. After installing the distributor and hopelessly losing the proper combination of distributor rotor position; Top Dead Center #1; and correct spark plug wire position on the cap, I followed advice I found on here somewhere:

I found the approximate location of TDC #1 by pulling #1 plug and putting finger in the hole while my 8 year old bumped the starter! For those of you who haven't tried it, it makes quite a pop, but you'll know when you've got it.

Then I turned the motor with a breaker bar on the balancer nut to exactly TDY #1 - the hole on the timing mark.

Then I installed the distributor and the plug wires with the rotor facing the number 1 wire, and went counter clockwise through the firing order installing the wires one at a time.

I started the engine, and it kicked back against the starter. I knew from my FBBO education that this meant the timing was probably too far advanced, so I turned the distributor counterclockwise and voila, a perfectly running engine with a brand new electronic ignition (from Bouchillon Performance). :hello2:
