I've seen plenty of classics with people advertising complete history to original purchaser. Some cars come with the paperwork and others have to do the research. If you're starting from scratch, how do you request your vehicle's title history from the DMV without a privacy issue? I only have the previous owner back to 1996. I'm in SoCal btw and I did the Chrysler historical request. Thanks anyone!

You don't.

I don't know of a state these days that will give you info that includes previous owners names (which is what everyone is after) due to privacy issues.

The people that have these things with their cars either got it before that became an issue or they collected it through previous owners working backwards. Some times the previous owners have copies of old registrations, plates, titles and other paperwork they have saved.

If you have not yet done so pull the seats and carpet of the car. There are often clues there such as receipts, match books, etc. that will have locations on them. With this info you can contact people in that area to see if anyone remembers the car and it's owner.

sadly,696pack is correct.in todays"need for privacy",you are only able to do title searches through dmv.not much info gained there.

Thanks guys.
Depends on what info you're looking for. In California you can pay for a Vehicle Registration History. It will tell you who owned it and from when to when. Sometimes in what city. This is a matter of public record. Just did this for my car. I was actually able to contact a prior owner from the info given (thanks Google).
