My 64 Belvedere still has the factory rear in it yet.I am going to change the gears either way.I have a later 68 to 70 b body housing with axles, should i use it or just change the gears and leave the 64 housing in the car?The newer housing has no brakes or hardware, will the hardware and brake stuff from the early 64 rear fit the later 68-70 one?

Not sure but wouldnt think so if it has the axle with the big nut to hold it on with the swedged drums

Just do the gears

Unless you really plan to hit that car hard I would just swap for a new set of gears. I thought of a swap and then said the heck with it because I had the wrong length and missing pieces and the springs did not line up and had a completely new Strange Eng dana 60 built for it... Tons of cash, but Done right the first time....

I replaced the tapered axle rear out of my '64 with one from a '68 GTX. It was an easy swap. My drums were all beat to heck from years of people removing them without the proper puller. The post-'64 rears are easier to work on, but with the proper puller, the tapered axles aren't a big deal - just a little more work. I do have the puller if you need one. One more thing about the swap - the '64 B body rearend is the widest of the B bodies, so you would pick up a little more tire clearance if you swapped.
