In summary, he made a decision that was deadly but was based on very limited weather knowledge of and in that era, and it dinged his career?

It didn't really mess up his career, Nimitz knew his man. But he never got over it. He made some poor decisions which put his fleet in a terrible situation. The heroes were the detroyer captains that disregarded orders and saved their ships, then picked up survivors. After that later in the war there was another storm and he obviously handled it much better.

Well until I read the book, I'll stay on the sidelines without further comment.

And yes for the captains that disobeyed orders and saved fellow seamen. Reminded me of the rescuers of the Indianapolis.
