Hey all,
I have a 65 727 with the 19 spline input shaft and 27 spline shaft support.

I got a barely used 2800 stall TC from a buddy for next to nothing, but its made for the 67-up as its got 24 spline count.

When I pull the stock TC off of the tranny and count the splines on the inside, its not 19 spline though.

I put on the new TC and it fits, but Im kinda assuming the car just wont move if I leave it on there.

Am I completely off here or am I close to knowing what Im talking about? Please explain as I have never really got the knack of how a TC works...lol.

If I cant use the new one, what are my options? Can i swap out input shafts from 19 to 24 spline? Id rather not get a whole new tranny as I really like how this one is built and shifts.

Thanks for the help.

kllrbee, you are correct. The 19 spline, early unit, has a smaller OD input shaftg than the later 24 splined units. The late model converter will physically fit in the early unit (but it will not function - of course), while the early converters will not fit into the later, larger splined, units.

Yes, you can make a few changes in your transmission to run the late model converters, but it requires complete disassembly of your trans. Any competent trans shop can handle it.

In fact, here's an entire write up from MoparMuscle Magazine on just how to do it.

I've got one I'm getting ready to do the same with. Good luck on yours.

You can change the front pump and input shaft to the 67 and up setup.
