Torqueflite Rebuild Issue

Hello all,

I am tearing into my '74 727 trans and have found something strange. Upon disassembly of the front pump, I see two V shaped gouges in the front pump support. At first glance I thought these were due to some debris in the pump but found nothing else evil in this area.

I did a bit of googling and happened to find photos of other stock front pump supports that showed these two features. My question is, has anybody else seen this? Could these be "normal" by products of the manufacturing process?

I would think this piece needs to be replaced, but I am still wondering about these:

Here is the pump support from my last rebuild. Looks the same. I hit it with a fine stone to remove burrs and re installed.

It is disturbing to see a gouge that doesn't belong there, but as long as it doesn't lead to the next port
and cause a definite leak, It'll be O.K. When these parts are manufactured, there are casting flashings
that break off and find their way into areas like this. This is the result. It looks bad, but is mostly cosmetic.
Before you re-assemble the transmission, take a small fine carbide burr and put a 45 degree chamfer on all of the
ports, but don't make the flat of the chamfer wider than 0.020 wide. Make sure you clean the parts squeaky-
clean. Remember, It's a hydraulic pump. Everything will work fine. They just can't afford to do that operation
on all of the parts at the factory, but you can!
 
Yes it’s normal, it is for oil flow under the rotors in the pump.

How else would two straight machined line get there? Not from operation, that would produce a curved pattern, right? Think about these things folks.

It’s like grooves in rocker shafts to spread out the oil.

Plenty of people know about transmissions. Not just one guy.

R413, You are correct! These slots are for oil to get under the gear pump rotors.
Under further research, I found a brand new pump with the same slots, one on each
port. I would still de-burr the castings slightly. I stand corrected!
 
Not a trans guy here but a hella googler.. Here is a picture of 2 side by side.. Looks to be machined.. As everyone above stated..

Thanks guys - I talked to John Cope about this and he indicated these are stock and normal.

Very strange, though, as I also could not imagine how they got there.
 
Working on different types of bearings for 30+ years, They would be there to force oil under the
pump gears so they don't make a dragging contact with the housing. Notice that they diminish in the
direction of rotation. I learned something new today!
 
This part in question is the reaction shaft support. Is it ok to use? Check where the input shaft rings ride (internal surface). Is it grooved? Check the ring grooves where the high gear drum seals. Are the grooves smooth and square to the ring? Check with new rings installed in the grooves held up to the light. Pump surface looks usable. If it passes these 2 tests you should be good to go. If not it needs replacement.
