I have 65 a Satellite 318 auto. Is the tranny a torqueflite or a 904? If it is TF will a later TF housing bolt up to the cable shift tail shaft?

i have the same car. mine had 318 and 904. the 904 is the smaller torqueflite. not sure, but i don't believe the later tailshaft housing will work with that rear shaft if it's the original trans. what's your plan?

I just want to put a stock 383 in it. Make it look period correct and drive it. No drag racing or anything.

I know the bellhousing won't match. I was wondering if the tail section on mine would mate to big block(383) housing.

Heres a good link with info to help. you say you want to install a 383 so your trans wont work with a 383. cable shift shouldnt affect tail shaft unless you are referring to ball and trunion vs slip yoke. i think these can be swapped but trans main shaft must swap with tailshaft housing i believe. sorry not a trans guy. the link will help you identify what you have though

thats what i did, swapped in 383. you will have to use a big-block 727 trans. i got lucky, i found a "65" 383 and it came with "65" 727. so i was able to use my existing shift/park cables.the 65 727 has the slip yoke tail housing(first year), 904 has ball & trunion.would be nice if you could find a 65 big block 727 to rebuild and use(would make things a lot simpler, you could just get new motor mounts, lengthen your distributor wires, and use your existing cables, oh and you would need a driveshaft with slipyoke.

So I need to look and see if I have a trunion type? If I have a slip yoke I'm good. Or are you saying I have a trunion type already? I have the original motor and tranny. 318 poly floor shift auto. Sorry if sound ignorant. I have never delt with this set up before. That would be great If I could hind a complete 65 set up. That is what I'm looking for.

If you have the original trans., it's most likely the 904 w/ball & trunion. Either way, the 383 will require a big-block 727.the reason i suggested a 65 unit is the trans. Mount is the same & you can use the cables you have now.i had never dealt with this setup before either, learned alot the hard way.the 65-727 is a one year only deal-cable shift, slip yoke.,also, 62-66 trannys have 19-spline torque converters, not compatable with later stuff(24-spline).it might be possible to use 62-64 trans.(cable shift/park lock) & keep ball&trunion,(not sure),but it would have to be from a big-block engine and i think you would still need diff. Ball/trun. Driveshaft as your 904 and a 727 have diff. Tailshaft length. I think someone(imperial ?) makes an adapter to use later trans. (67-up) with your cables, again, not sure. Hope some of this helps you.

Doug you have been a great help. I'm hoping to find a 65 newport or something with a 383 that I can swap the whole thing out with. That seems like the easiest thing to do.

i was told that my engine/trans. came out of a big car(fury-newport?). so it worked with my cables even though it probably came from a column shift car.

That's what I'm hoping to find. I know where one car is, but the ******** would rather let it sit outside and ruin than sell it. Did you keep yous stock or did you build it up?

the 383 is bored .030 over w/flat top pistons-basically stock bottom end. i used 70's era heads(# 346) from aerohead racing, rebuilt w/ oversized valves-one of my original heads had hole in bowl under valve. would have rather used the 65 heads(#516) as they are closed chamber heads, they just need a bigger exhaust valve.i used lunatti cam, eld.performer rpm intake,750 holley, doug's headers. painted orig. turquoise, looks like orig. engine that's been hotrodded a little. it's got a 3.55 suregrip rear,s.s. rear springs,& big block torsion bars. it's a mild build ,but can really scare you.
