Ok my set up is a 66 727 with a Cheeta Action full manual reverse pattern valvebody with a Cheeta Action torque converter. Last time I drove it I was on the expressway going about 60 mph for a while, i'm running a 4:56 rear gear. Engine temp was good @185. It started smoking out the back. I stopped and looked under the car. No drips that i could see. Wasn't smoking while stopped. Got it home pretty quick. Checked it out and it seems like it was leaking somewhere from the front pump area. I put a new FP seal in a couple of months ago.
Could the fluid pressure build up and blow out the vent?
I'm thinking about installing a temp guage to monitor it
.
Any ideas on why it would leak so much to blow out from the inspection cover area and burn off on the headers?

Also anyone have any idea how to get burned trans fluid off the coated headers?

The first thing that comes to mind is the tranny is getting really hot. Put that gauge on and lets see what's going on.

Go for the low hanging fruit first. Check the easy things. Check fluid level and condition. And get a temp guage like Meep-Meep says. I wouldnt think it would run too hot on the highway, unless you have a really loose converter i guess. I take it you have an external trans cooler?

No, no external cooler. i'm going to do a filter and fluid change later this week and check things out more.

Well. I got the guage installed. Haven't run it yet. Raining. What would the normal op temp be? I've looked on line and can't seem to find it. The guage reads 110 -280 i think

About the same as the engine 180F or so once completely warmed up.

Make sure the trans vent is open. Ron

Well, I installed the guage and took it for a short drive Saturday morning
In the Dexter Daze parade. It was only about 65 degrees and the temp only got to 180. I'm pretty sure the vent is open because that's where the fluid came from. I'm going out to Woodward Saturday so i'll see how it goes.
It's 60 miles from home and that will be the test.
