Trans tail shaft

Can a short shaft be changed for a long shaft? If so, common hand tools or specialty tools?

I ask this cause a rebuilt trans is available for a bargain but the il is short and mine is long, so I thought about just swapping them.

Yes you sure can.
The transmission will have to come completely apart though. You will use the output shaft and ext housing.

That's what I was thinking, but I did have a glimmer of hope that it was just r/r type job. So now the search continues for a b/rb trans.

My brother lives in Long Beach and it sounds like you guys might be within an hour drive or so and I might be able to talk him in to helping you out with either fixing yours or making the swap. Let me know if you might be interested in something like this. We both grew up in a tranny shop in Long Beach and still do transmission's on the side. Dad retired hos shop so we can still get good prices on parts also.
