Im sure its been talked about, but I can not find it. Has anyone swapped the push button style trans to the post 1966 trans? Ive located Imperial Specialties for $150 you get the cable from console to trans..is this "problem free" and would I need to make new trans mounts also? Is there any advantage of going with a 1966 + trans? - confused-

I am using a 67 727 and just installed a B&M shifter. If you want stock looking then you will need the conversion for push button.

There has been some chatter on this site about Imperial being unresponsive lately.

The cable and hardware is fairly inexpenive but in order to use it you need to have your pushbutton assembly modified by Imperial too ... that's quite expensive.

I also wanted to have this done on my Polara but wiser minds convinced me to just stay with the PB.

Confused!

:confused3: Are you trying to put the later lever operated trans into an early PB car, or an early console car? Anyway Shumacker is now doing the cables for Imperial, they may be able to help.

Ive got a push button car with no transmission, (1964) Im in the process of converting it into a console with buckets, Ive got a 1964 console with shifter and the 2 cables, still no tranny, should I try to find a PB tranny and be on my way OR convert the 64 Console to a 1966+ tranny set up? Is the PB tranny as strong as the 66 +?

Trans

If you are going to a console you should go with the 66 and up trans. The conversion is not that tough. You can buy the imperial stuff. I converted one before those kits were available by just using a shifting cable out of jegs and mounting it to the shifter inside the console then routing it under the car and installing a bell crank to shift the grand. Still working after all these years.

You got 90% of it. Get the other 10% and get a cable shifted trans. Not a thing wrong with them.

Just a thought...........after converting to a console shift, would it be feasable to use an aftermarket shifter with a '64-'65 shifter handle fitted and welded in place of the aftermarket one? This would allow the use of a later model trans (more plentiful) with a stock interior appearance.

Im learning each day the early B bodies are different! The push button trans requires a "special" drive shaft also! Im liking the newer trans conversion more and more.......

Yes, 1965 was the year that they went to the slip yoke tail shaft. The trans was still the 2 cable set up with 1 doing the shifting and the other for park. This is on the 727. The 904 (still cable) had the flange type tail shaft(mostly slant six) and the flange size was smaller than the 727.Lot of changes were going on back then.

Yes, the cable shift 727s are just as strong as the later year 727s. They sat behind Max Wedges, after all. Are you in need of a small block or big block transmission? I have a small block cable shift 727 out of my '64. I also have a spare ball and trunion driveshaft from a '64 Fury.
