I'm having trouble I have a 87 dodge truck I put a 340 in it and and 833 od 4 speed it worked fine. But I didn't really care for the tranny I wanted one with out od so I bought one out of a 69 roadrunner everything bolted up fine everything is same length but my shifter won't work I have done everything do I need a b body shifter any help would be great thanks

You may need a 4 speed shifter or maybe just the shift rods or you may just need to turn the lower shift lever so it points up instead of down or vis versa. That's how the OD four speeds work. They use 3rd gear (OD ratio) for 4th and the 4th gear which is 1 to 1 for 3rd.

Someone will happen along with a more definitive answer soon I imagine but I hope this helps a little in the mean time. In the meantime google search for some images showing the shift rods and see the difference.

welcome to FBBO

maybe post this in the transmission section or the general discussion forums
this is the welcome wagon not as many viewers & it's really for intros & a little background etc.,
not really intended to be a tech forum...

good luck

How about we just move this thread and he starts a new welcome wagon thread :)

The A body shifter adapter is different from the B and also the E. All the shifter rods are also different. The 70' B shifter for a pistol grip with console is another animal all together and a 1 year only deal (along with the rods). So you have (now) a B body trans and that will require a B body adapter plate, B body shifter rods, and a 69' and down shifter mechanism.

Check out Brewer's Performance, they have pics of what parts for what years and that may help ya out.

Something that caught me out a few weeks ago might be the problem. I recently swapped out (and back again) an A833 out of a '69 Roadrunner. When I initially installed the trans in my car, I used MY shifter adapter plate. But when I put my trans (after a rebuild) back in my car the gears would not select at all. After much wailing and gnashing of teeth, we discovered that I had installed the Roadrunner shifter adapter plate on my trans. The '69 Inland adapter plate does not have a recess for the selector pin to move into when changing gears, while the '70 onwards Hurst version has a recess. You may find that the shifter mechanism just needs a different adapter block/plate.
Either that or you just need to align the gears with the aid of a 1/4" bolt about 2-1/2" long. :headbang:

Thanks for all the help and info I figured I would Ned a new shifter because mine was out of a truck and for an od 4 speed but I thought I would ask on here first just to see if I was missing something simple.

Your OD transmission linkage only works on the OD. Might be able to only replace the linkage however you should call Brewer's Performance and ask them what is needed, it might just be 1 arm different and they should know and could have it.

hi and welcome to the site :headbang:

A 4 speed shifter body is just that and with the proper shift forks, mounting adaptors and linkages will work with just about any side plate 4 speed transmission regardless of transmission manufacture. If your shifter is going threw the original hole in the floor all that is needed is the correct linkage and forks.

I had a generic hurst comp plus with generic rods on my 70 roadrunner with console and it worked fine.

I have kind of the opposite situation as you. My 71rr has an od trans & 440 out of a 77 van. The person I bought the car from put B/E shift rods on it and set it up like a non od trans. As a result my 3-4 shifted backwards. I ended up fabricating a new 3-4 shift rod because when I flipped the shift lever over, it wouldn't work because, 1) it was too short, and 2) it was hitting the trans support. You will probably need to get a new shift rod which will work properly with the changed configuration.

Keep in mind the OD 4 speeds have the 3-4 shift lever on the tranny flipped 180 deg from a typical B body installation. Also the late model truck trannys have some steel adapter/riser plate that the Hurst shifter box bolts to, assuming your truck came with the Hurst box. Otherwise you will need to make sure you have the correct adapter/mount for the box. Also you will need the correct 3-4 rod that allows you to flip the lever back to the B body position, or just cut and weld using a piece of thick wall tubing as the splice.
