This Christmas saw the passing of two long-time friends of the family. Our last tube TV, an early 2000's 32" Sony set that my son was using was replaced by a 32" LCD set that weighs about 8,000 pounds less than the Sony and isn't wider front to back than an AMC Pacer. Our other loss was the devoted DVD player that was in our bedroom. It's passing marked the end of an era as it was the last DVD player in the house and they've all been replaced by Blue Ray players and gaming systems.

Burial services were held this morning, and the TV and DVD player now rest besides their brethren cassette deck, VHS player, and the 12" black & white portable TV everyone in America used to have in their kitchens before they were migrated to everyone's garages.

My condolences to you for the T.V. and DVD player. I'm sure they gave you many happy memories and provided hours of entertainment with your family.

There is not a dry eye in the house.....RIP

I am going to get a blue ray some day. Still have two VCR's and DVD's and just this week sent my cassette tapes to the thrift store when I realized I no longer had anything play them. All but my favorite VCR tapes went to the thrift store a few months back. My 35inch hundred pound picture tube TV is still going strong and has outlasted two of my flat screens. Just destroyed my 6 year old Acer laptop last weekend trying to take it apart to replace the battery charger input plug. My 8 year old HP laptop (Windows Vista) that has some caps that don't work on the keyboard is still chugging along along with a year old Lenovo. I am using Windows 8 with the classic menu installed and no touch screen computer.

I am not what you call an early technology adopter, and when I do adopt it, I hang on to the old to the bitter end. I still know a guy who claims Betamax is coming back.

I don't bury them.....but shoot them instead! :D

RIP

We have a combimation VCR/DVD/HDDVD recording playback machine we bought 4 years ago to put videos on disc.

And we have a combo BlueRay/DVD player as well.

"Fair thee well, tube TVs" - a Eulogy

You were with us during our our biggest triumphs, the moon walk, PONG, the 1980 US Hockey Team, MNF, the Berlin Wall coming down.

You saw us through the tragedy of Kennedy, the Challenger, and Vietnam.

Though your tube is dark, we will never forget your images.

RIP and God Bless them!
Wow, they have been part of the "family" for so many years!
Our sympathy for your loss is with you!
Gee..hold old was that Sony?

The Sony was one of their first HD models, so it dates to 1998 or so I think. The picture was turning green on the sides, so it was about to go. :(

One passing I refuse to remember was the loss of our old three-tube projection big screen. :) Talk about ding-dong the wicked tv is dead moments! I paid almost $1,000 to replace the green gun when it went bad, and a month later the red one went. That TV was taken out back and beaten to death. I much prefer the DLP sets where you just replace one $80 lamp and you're good for a couple of years.

Hmm, 1998 huh....
Gee, that like Dog Years isnt it...I'd say "she" was about 105 years old in people years....
RIP...
That Green on the borders, yup, she definitely had "Power-supply" Cancer...it's over at that stage!

RIP

I send all my outdated electronic equipment out with a bang...

I still have a DVD player but I never use it. I'm hoping it will one day become a collectors item and I can retire off the proceeds after it sells on fleabay for $100,000.00.

Interestingly, I just bought a cassette deck last year, and my wife just bought me one of those direct to USB turntables.

Apparently I have several items in my music collection that no one can find already in digital format.

My Sony 1985-ish 9xx series receiver is on the way out, however. I'll sure Miss that. Finding a replacement will be a tall order.

I'm glad I waited to replace my 27" TV. I wasn't about to spend $1,000 for a set with a smaller screen.

I ended up with a 47, which is about equal height-wise.

I keep threatening to go projector and screen, and my next may be an LED projector (no $400 bulb), but I'll wait until they are more than 500 lumens and under $900.

If I never have to move a tube TV again in my lifetime that will be fine with me. For years we had a console TV in a big oak cabinet that was a real good TV and nice piece of furniture but we had to move it a couple of times. My back hurts just thinking about it. When it finally gave up I disassembled it in the house rather than try to move it one last time.

May your ol'crap rest in pieces...he he ha ha... yeah technology in TV & videos stuff has come along way, but I still have 3 tube TV's until they die I won't be changing them, the oldest a Magnavox 24" Color from early mid 80's {was my Pop's TV from his cabin in MiWuk} it's not used much still has a great pitcher, a 25" Sony 3-1 TV DVD & VHS combo from mid-late 90's in my bedroom {weights a ton, probably 150#'s} & a small 13" Sony TV VHS combo from 2000, in the spare bedroom from my old golf store... I still have a 53" Sony Projection TV too, not in use... I still have a ton of great ol'VHS tapes, so my old early 80's Emerson 4-head VHS player recorder is still around too, albeit not used hardly ever... We have a relatively new 2012 LCD 53" Sony Bravo High Def/Wide/Flat screen TV, with the old Sony projector TV's surround sound system, now in the front room... I use my Playstation game console for my DVD & CD's now, thru the TV's surround sound-system, I don't even have a stereo anymore, just a cheap 80's Boom Box in Garage... Pop's still has some ol' Made In China POS 5 disc CD player, it's never used, but he won't part with it...
