I put a 392 in my 66 charger and ended up withna vibration in neutral. I had to have the crank holes welded shut and new ones drilled for the converter to fit..I took it to a machine shop and looks like they did a fine job. Also, the balancer on the front crank pulley moves back and forth about 1/8" so it is not perfectly true. My question is, would the balancer on the front make the vibration or am I doomed to pull off the flex plate???

i'd say if the balancer is moving in and out then so is the crank, which means the thrust bearing on the mains is gone.

I agree that sounds like a crank bearing issue!

I think your doomed to pulling the whole bottom end apart :sad7:

May I suggest that you check the balancer itself to see if the outer part is moving on the inner part. That could be the vibration. If the harmonic balancer is GOOD,then refer back to the thrust bearing. Shoot it with the timing light, keep the t/light on it while someone puts it in & out of gear unless it's a stick.:icon_viking:

Engine balance advice needed

We can rule out the thrust bearing as the engine has 2 miles on it. I think I worded it wrong. When I said it's going in and out what I meant was one side of the balancer itself is off center. One side of the weight is on more than the other side making the weight warble when running. If I drive down the road at say 40, the vibration is in and out fairly quick if i go up to 70 the in and out vibration slow down but lasts longer. Feels like a really bad wheel brg or driveshaft brg but drive 70 and take it out of gear and slow the engine down and it all goes away proving it's in the engine someplace. Hope this paints a picture to u guys.

So, give me some advice guys

Does a 392 in a 66 Charger mean the old hemi?
Was the engine rebalanced before it went together?
When you say weight does that imply this is an externally balanced engine?
Is there a weight on the flex plate and did it get phased correctly?

If you have a mass wobbling because of eccentricity then you need to correct that first.

I, having a hard time believeing that the balencer could that much of a serious if a vibration. If u watch it when the engine is running, the balanced moves maybe 1/8" way out on the outer edge. That's really not that much to me. I'm still back on the converter and flexplate. Does anyone know for sure if the converter should be internal or external balanced?? And if I pull it out, how can I know which one I have besides the welded weights??

Thanks in advance for taking the time to help me out here

Ok, im not sure if it's the cause, but it sure ain't helping if there is something wrong with it. And if you know there is something wrong, then it needs a new one regardless. I am not at home right now, but when i get there i have a book on first gen hemi's. It is pretty detailed in what fits what and what is interchangeable. It will have info on how its balanced(internal or external). I will report back anything i can that will help
