Undercoat Paint ?

Cleaning some surface rust from the underside of the unibody, want to paint/undercoat it.

What are you guys using for this ?
 
I just got done undercoating my Satellite and I used both POR-15 and a product called Rust Seal by KBS. Personally, I like the Rust Seal better, I think it looks nicer and it appears to coat thicker as well but it still retains the same qualities of POR-15 and I think its actually cheaper also. I used Eastwood products.

First coated with Rust Converter.
Second, two coats of Rust Encapsulator (epoxy-based coating).
Final, three coats of Chassis Black.

It results in a hard chip-resistant coating.

How many gallons does it take to coat the underbody? I'm sure it will vary a little bit between A and B bodies but how much have you guys gone through? Also what kind of prep work did you do for the RustSeal?
 
Tell me if I'm nuts, but I'm looking at having it "rhino-coated" or whatever name you want to use for the current bedliner coatings. I live 2 miles from the nearest paved road anyway! It seems to have all the qualities we want for undercarriage protection. Opinions?
 
Use it, it will protect really well, but it will not come off once you put it on.
 
rhino liner is a great undercoating but if you cover any bolts with it for example shock stud mounts you will need a wire wheel grinder to ever get that bolt or nut off again and you will need a professional to spray it for you, dont use the cheap roll on bedliner from walmart it wont hold up
 
I used the bed-liner in the spray cans inside the trunk area looks good and so far holding up very well. im think im going to use it on the floor inside.
 
I just did mine,I sanded it down, hit it with rust converter then scuffed it then used 2k primer and then just painted it.My bud did his the same way 5 years ago and it's still in good shape.

I've only heard horror stories about POR-15.

I'm in total agreement with Donny. When I started bringing back my 73 Charger in 06, I used por 15 on the K frame while I had it out. The crap started chunking off before I got the damn thing back in the car. My 69 on the other hand in 97 I used a brush on rust converter from Advance painted the K flat black. and spray canned the undercoating with mar-hide and its still nice. Needless to say I removed the por-15 from my 73 K and did it the same as the 69. Good luck with your car.
 
I like the POR-15. Put it on my car 15 years ago and it looks the same today.
 
I think Por15 is hit or miss.

I have had bad results that I blamed on poor prepping and had to recoat, but still had problems. My biggest pet peeve was the bubbles. Dang I hate the bubbles. Its only really an issue if you brush it.

Here is what I have tired and the results I saw:

"Rust Bullet": thick, good adhesion, poor appearance when dry. Hard to topcoat.
"Por 15": Easy to apply, can "bubble" after application if its too thick. Very messy.
"Eastwood rust encapsulator": easy to apply, good self-levelling, pretty enough when done to work as a epoxy primer, great adhesion, easy to topcoat.

All are expensive IMO for what you get.

Still, I recommend a chassis black coat at the end. If you are cheap, I have used Nason's ready to use chassis black, but its not that durable.

As far as surface prep goes. . .

My process was the same for EITHER the POR-15 or the Rust Seal,

I power washed the **** out of it with maximum strength Purple Power than, when I had done all I could do, I crawled underneath the car with a paint stripper wheel and a plug in (cordless doesnt have the torque) power drill, plugged in some Metallica and went to work town.

Its amazing how much **** can accumulate in 44 years!

I did not have a single problem with the POR-15, I just like the finish on the Rust Seal more.

I THINK you should be good with two gallons, depends on how much you coat it and if your gonna do the inside of the floor pans and trunk (I recommend that you do.) Might go with 2 1/2 or 3 just to be safe and depending on how hot it is where your at get a couple gallons of the surface prep/primer stuff.

I don't recommend Rhino lining because I think it looks funky and will leave the underside of your car with a textured finish that will be hard to get grease and road grime off of in the future.
