I am in the process of upgrading my stereo. I want it to fit into the same area as the stock one. I see similar radios from classiccarstereos.com, classicindustries.com, carid.com etc.... Does anyone have any recommendations or feedback from these?

What year is your car? I have a Custom AutoSound that went right in with only a slight modification for the dial face opening on our car.

I just installed a Hermosa B stereo adding two speakers in the rear on my '63 Fury ragtop. Yeah a lot of finagling but the shaft-mount radio was the only reasonable option in my mind. With the earlier radio I put in I ended up doing some cutting in the dash; but not much that remained hidden by the face plate and would always be even if going back to an original radio. As well, I had a spare faceplate I cut out to accept the new radio having an original in storage again if ever deciding to have 100% original set up. Lets say I found this comforting before doing the fab work. The new radio needed some added customizing so a buddy who is a CNC op made me up an aluminum face plate insert. This avoided my plan B of cutting one out of plexi glass. My plan either way was to paint that part of the insert red to match the interior; but like the raw aluminum plate as is for now. The Hermosa has just a ton of features, more than I wanted having all sorts of plug-in wires. I made up a plexi glass plate to hide all this wiring but allowing the USB to hang down or slip over the plate. If I can send along a few pic's will do. I searched for a long time for a radio having features I wanted and offer a decent fit as shaft mounts aren't all that common anymore today..

here's a pics a bit grainy but quickly taken...

That looks really good for an aftermarket radio install.
I am very impressed with your dedication to making something look like factory even if it wasn't.

Thanks much Darthomas. Yeah as you know there are just a ton of possible ways to go enough to have me scratching my head for sometime. Having already done some modification years ago with the rad I had put in, decided to go this route and so far so good...works and sounds great...enough for my old ears. Coincidently I just had a new exhaust system installed and asked the installer for "mild" but also said make it sound like a Road Runner...he leaned more on the RR. A tad loud for me though sounds meaner than hell...just have to turn up the volume more!

What model did you put in? What about your speaker setup? I don't want to do any modded to my dash console, I just paid $3K to get it redone. (with gauges)

I got the RetroSound Hermossa radio online. There was very little modification that I had to do. I got a two speaker mount for the 4x10 front from that guy on our forum and bought two 4" speakers for it as Iwas not going to cut openings in my doors or kick panels.

I couldn't find the two speaker mount for the 4x10, which person are you referring to? So you went with two 4" speakers for the rear? I foprgot which size it was, but I would think 5x7 or 6x9s would work for the rear. If I remember correctly (car is not here with me in Japan, it's in Texas) one of the hole was off so I was going to add a spacer between the speaker and rear panel and I figured that would work. How is your sound? do you have any external amps? It's good enough?

BTW, Have you seen any reviews for the amplified antennas? It says it needs to be mounted high. I'm curious about this, might just go with a powered antenna..

Check out '74 Sport a member here. He makes a bracket for a two speaker install. I got one from him. Plenty of sound with no need for an amp. I didn' even have the antenna mast on and the radio was pulling in stations.

Check out www.woodradios.com . Their conversion uses the stock radio, adding fm, other inputs with no modifications to stock radio. Maintain collector status, but with better sound. I have seen and listened to Larrys radios, powerful clear sound. No cutting of dash either.

There is an amazing upgrade made by a member here ( Roadrunner72 I think its his nickname? ) based on a mids 90s Mopar Radio and using the stock 71/74 case. If was available that radio down here in Vzla pretty sure I would have made it!

Can't find the link now
