Valve cover breather removal

I tried twisting, pulling, and prying on the breather cap for my big block valve covers and cant get the thing out. It just spins.. Behind the valve cover is a baffle so i cant really see how its in there. Were these meant to be removed. Thanks. I post a pic of the style i have. Valve covers are at the shop image.jpg
 
They pop out. Pull & twist usually does it.

How old is the rubber grommet that it fits into? If it's several years old, it's most likely dried and hard as a rock and if it's original, it is dried and hard. Heat might/should help to get it out. Heat lamp or hair dryer should do it.

Did some research, they are from 1971
