Looks like I have to change valve seals in m 67 318. Bad job? Is it best to remove the rocker shaft?

Either way to do the job, on or off the car, the rocker shaft will have to be removed. Bad job? Not really. Just kind of tedious to do it in car imo. Do you have the right tools for this?

if you do it "in-car"...i would make these recommendations:

1.go buy one of those "Teeter Hang-ups" advertised on TV....coz youll need one when youre done
2. get a few pairs of fender protectors
3.dont wear a belt buckle
4. find a little Japanese girl with cute little feet to walk on your back every hour or so.
5. have the right tools like cranky said.

ORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR......

Take the heads off and do a top end rebuild....only makes sense ifya asked me!

I just have go to Advance and get a valve spring compressor, I should be ok with tools after that. Thanks guys, Dave

If you use air to hold the valves closed while you remove the valve springs, make sure you bring that cylinder's piston up to TDC. In case you bump a valve and make it fall into the cylinder, it'll hit the piston and stop, rather than fall completely into the cylinder. That would suck big sweatty, nasty, gnarly balls.

I prefer to use a length of nylon rope put into the cylinder and then bring it up to TDC. This will physically hold the valves shut without causing damage.

As others have mentioned, if the valve seals are bad, it could be an indicator that some of the rest of the engine needs attention. I would inspect everything very carefully. Would be a good time to inspect valve guide wear since the springs are coming off. If the valve guides are worn dramatically, you might consider going a little deeper.
