I'm trying to change the valve springs on the Cordoba without pulling the heads. I can get the springs compressed but I can't get the retainers to break loose from the locks. I've tried lightly tapping the retainers with a rubber mallet but no luck. Anybody know a trick to getting these things to break loose?

i use a plastic hammer and hit them on the edge of the retainer.

Your problem is you are only using one tool! Diversify my brother.

I've always put a 11/16th socket over the stem/keepers and tap the bottom of it while its reasting on the top of the retainer to break it loose.

Well I tried just about everything and nothing worked so I'm going to pull the heads. While they're off I've decided to gasket match the intake and heads and do a little port cleanup.

Sometimes you need to smack them pretty good.
