Valve spring question...

I picked up a set of 452 heads (unassembled). There were 8 valve springs with dampers and 8 without dampers. Is this normal and if so which valves have the dampers. Also what purpose do the dampers serve? Thanks.

all should have dampners. the dampner is for harmonics.

I have heard of that, some guys do the damper on the exhaust because the exhaust valve runs hotter...(Just say'in) BUT, If you are unsure of what you have,I would forget about them and get the valve springs that will go with the cam you are using. Unless your plan is a low RPM stock cam type of build for a daily driver.
