I'm searching Amazon for Valvoline 10W-40, but all I see is 20W-50 and 10W-30? Do they make VR1 in 10-40?

I’ve never seen it.

From what I understand the 10w40 used to be available but no longer. I use VR1 only, and for the next oil change I thought of using 4 qts of 10w30 and 1 qt of the 20w50.

I think 10-W-40 was discontinued. The 10-W-30 doesnt have as much zinc as 20-W-50, there are some 10-W-40 brands out there with good Zinc content.

I’m using the Gibbs HR5 oil in 10w-40. I could find the VR1. 10w-30 is probably okay. Just seems too light.

From what I remember, the 10w/15w-40 had some problems with holding viscosity (or something?)

i don't think it works that way. You would better off running another quality oil in 10-40. IMHO

Penn Grade 1 makes a 15W40. It's a high zinc partial synthetic oil that I've used in the past on my BB Mopars, when I didn't want to run the 20W50 VR1. Last year I used VR1 20W50 in my '66 GTO, because that's what the previous owner had used. I was a little disturbed because of the lifter noise. This year I switched to VR1 10W30 and the lifter noise has gone away so far. I have noticed that the oil pressure when the engine is at normal temp has dropped from 20 to 15 psi at idle, but runs at 60 psi with both oils while driving.

Sure it does. While it is not advisable to mix brands, mixing viscosities will simply give you a viscosity somewhere between the two.

I've run VR1 in my Roadrunner since I got it. I was using it in the GTO as well, but now that that is a roller cam motor, I use regular Valvoline in the GTO.
VR1 is good stuff.
