So I was in my Garage the other day with my 8 year old and he pointed to the vent window on my 70 Charger and asked what it was for. I started to ansewer him but I then realized I have no idea. Is it a relic of a long gone era when smoking was less frowned upon? Or to allow air flow when parked in the hot summer months back in the day when people didn't view an open window as an invite to steal somthing? I don't mean to sound dumb but I was born in 1980 and have never owned any other car with this feature.

I think it was for non air cars for when it was raining. you could open the vent without getting wet. Thats what I have used it for anyway.

exactly what it is a VENT window
when in open position while your driving you can control the air flow into the car
keep in mind if you were buying a car in the 60's to go fast the last thing you wanted was an extra 100lbs of weight in form of A/C and the horse power loss while it was running

Back before global warming, and before 99% of all cars were built with a/c.....

Definately functional as a "vent", if you didn't want to open the window.

Not as much air flowed in, and they definatley deflected rain.

I surmise, that manufacturing costs actually killed the "wing" as it was popular to call them in my neck of the woods.

How much lees expensive is one piece of glass vs 2 pieces plus the frame and the hinge and latch and additional weatherstripping?

I acyually miss them, as it was a good way to get ventilation without a blast of air over the top of your head.

best way i can say it is an open window is like standing 10' in front of a fan to wear open window plus open vent "wing" window is like sitting a foot away from the same fan. the vent window can be aimed to blast the air pretty much straight in your face when the regular side window just kind of fluffs your hair a little bit.

that, and if you have shorts on, it's a nut cooler too...

Just don't drive behind kdtjb, his smoke might land in your lap....in which case it might be more like a Blast Furnace on your nut bag.:campfire:

My father used them for his smokes, usually we would get hit with the ashes if our back window was open.
I use them to get fresh air when opening the window is too much, especially noise on the open road.
As far as rain is concerned, if you open the vent window during a downpour the rain still comes in and on you and the floor.

Maybe they were designed to work in conjunction with enevitable cowl rust...to kill the front floor pans.

Grab handle!! Open the vent just a bit and you had something to hang onto. With power steering and no seat belts, the window channel made for a great grab handle when doing donuts etc and steering with one hand was easy :D

Your right Cranky, I remember reading that somewhere in the owners manual.:rolling:

Yup, says so in my manual too. It's in the burnouts and donuts section lol

My buddy had them in his 68 Coronet. While riding with him, the passenger side got sucked-out at 120mph! This guy also lost a side mirror at 110 in a Dakota. Dealer wouldnt warranty it. Probably shouldn't have said 110 mph, but ya gotta know my friend! "If the speedo goes to 120, then **** shouldnt fall-off till then!" Service writer didn't seem to care!
