I was looking at some old car mags(66-71) that I have bought here and there over the years, and came across some cool articles and advertisements.
I tried to search for some threads containing this info, but had no luck, could be because the word vintage brings up a large amount of stuff, or could be I just stink.
Anyway, thought I would post a few of the cooler things I found, to share the wealth with others.
9/66 issue of Hot Rod magazine, it has the new to 67' engines (440 YEAH!!!!)
9/69 issue of Hot Rod magazine contains the first look at the new for 1970 cars( Challenger, Cuda, Duster.
I may be able to scan the pages of the articles to post them here, for all to read.
In the meantime here are some phots of cool Mopar stuff from them.
First is a test from Car Life (10/70) with the "new" for 71 cars.

Part of a Vic Edelbrock 500HP 340, build.
They "restricted" oil flow to the rockers, I was always told this is a BAD idea, maybe its a small block thing?

:thankyou: interesting,especially the car advertisements.

Interesting that the 340 Duster and Dart, both with 3.23 gears hung right with those big block 3.55 and 3.90 cars.

One factor that must be stated is these car had those skinny bias ply tires on it then, so I am sure that hurt the amount of power you could apply to the ground.
LOL.
I have some more, just trying to get them copied clearly.
If anyone else has cool old articles like this please feel free to post along.
I have the Popular Mechanics customer questionnaire report for the 1966 Charger, very interesting read.
One funny quote, A hemi Charger owner states it has plenty of "passing power", I bet it does ,lol.
Another guy complains about the ash tray location, that there is none for the passenger, and when the a/c is on it blows ashes all over, another good one!
There are a couple of cool Camero,(ad for Nickey Camero)and Mustang things, I may post later

Those elapsed times in post #1 are the most accurate/believable I have ever seen in one chart!

In post #4, I notice for the first time how the vertical uprights in the rear wing help stabilize the forward motion/oversteer in a cross wind (or on the racetrack). Interesting.

The 340 build article above should be interesting.

Nick's Garage dyno just measured 560 HP on a stroked 340 (took it to 7,100 RPM):

I have never had a 340, all my muscle car Mopars, except one, have had B or RB's, but the 340, is well know as a screamer!!!!
It was such a beast they put a 727 behind it!!!

I had never heard of Car Life Magazine, must have merged into Motor Trend just about the time I started reading the car magazines:

OVERVIEW
Car Life was initially published by Henry Scharf through his Motor Publications Inc organization located in New York City. Arthur Unger was both the executive director and editor of the magazine. The magazine focused on cars built in Detroit including concept and factory production vehicles. Full issues were dedicated to the latest models including technical evaluations and comparison tests. It also covered sports cars, vintage or classic cars, and other automotive topics of interest to the target reader.

In 1957 the magazines began using the tag line "The Family Auto Magazine". This continued through 1958, then was dropped. Scooters and go-karts were added in 1959. In 1961, ownership changed to publisher John R. Bond and his Bond Publishing Company. Changes included new cover graphics, and content had more muscle cars and racing activities. In 1968, the tag line "The Automotive Action Magazine" was added. The magazine ended in October 1970 and was merged into Motor Trend in the December 1970 issue.

Exactly. Reminds me of another recent thread where Cranky and I discussed how the hot 340 was adept at shutting down lessor big blocks. And here in this article, you got a Dart Swinger 340 shuttling down a 69 Fairlane Cobra with a 428/4sp!

In that test the 340, is 14.72, and a Charger R/T, 14.71, and Super Bee 14.73. Dam that is close!!! 340/440/383 all running that close, that is truly a photo finish,LOL!!

My parents new '71 383 (low-compression) Road Runner could never quite break into the fourteen second bracket.

What rear did it have? Maybe 3.23's?

The 383 Super Bee (Charger body) has 3.91's and JUST made it at 14.73.

I had one 340 years ago in a 73 Charger. I never brought it to the track but I will say that motor screamed. It really liked the higher RPMs.

When I go on vacation I have time to read and grab a handful of the old magazine to enjoy.
