Walnut VS Media blasting...

Whats your thoughts VS media and soda for complete exterior body strip ?

Walnut is cheap, reusable, but very DIRTY! And, it's organic, so, get it out of your car or it will draw in moisture. And, it lasts forever! It will take rust off vs Soda won't.

Of just use one media for 'em all? Its an expensive process, one I like to minimize costs to the customer.

True. Have you used that Black Magic or Black something? Buddy swears by it. Says that like soda it doesn't heat up the metal but cleans rust well.

Well ....Donny is in the business, So Donny what's your recommendation .
There is some surface rust and the undercarriage has some flaking.
all in all not too bad but there is 2-3 repaints on it plus the current rattle primer that's been on it for a couple years. The primer has been on long enought to see surface rust starting to show through in certen areas.I'm planing to do the complete car inside and out as well as the undercarriage.

What is Black Magic?

Black magic is just putty (bondo).. Unless there is something else with the same name, but its been around a long time and i didn't think that was made anymore..

Donny's the one who will know what to do, Back in the day when i trapped i used walnuts to dye my traps, i don't know about taking rust off with them but they sure do keep traps from rusting for a long time.

I have a few myself as of late! But that Black magic, i only used a quart of it once but it was 1/2 way decent to work with.. But in sure the walnut shells will rip any out of the body with little problem but im no expert to whats the best stuff to blast with.. I use stuff from Harbor freight when im doing small stuff like a glass bead i used for an intake, it worked great, ive used sand to blast some rust from valve covers, actually we had some play sand for the grand kids (just one bag) and i used it to blast away two rust spots that needed repaired on my Ram, that stuff is really to fine for doing anything to large, but it worked ok.

Black magic might be the stuff I use in my blast cabinet. I think it is coal slag. Works good for metal but to rough to use on alum.

Not as course and ruff as coal slag. Can use it on sheet metal. Slag is for cast iron and such. Not sheet or soft metal.

What machines are you using? Need some background as to what I'd recommend, etc. You say you're going to blast the car, inside and out. Where, equipment, recovery of media, where are you buying and what are you paying? Run away from H.F. supplying you medias, they are WAY too expensive. To do a car, unrecovering the media, better buy 1000 lbs at least of media. How big is your blast pot? You may be getting into areas/variables that weighing time, costs, supplies, local vendors, local providers of blasting services all needs to be weighed out.

Sorry not doing it myself... I will be sending it out, just looking for the correct / best method and material to start the resto off on the right foot.

If you're sending it out, do they not know what to use? Are you trying to get them to use walnut shells? I will say, Media Blasting is a very important part at the beginning! I did some Chevy truck inner fenders the other day, looked good...took the black paint off, rust, little pin holes developed right before my eyes! Would not have discovered this if the guy just 'sanded' and sprayed! It not only removed rust and paint, it tests the metal for you, meaning, finds the weak areas that you'll need to fix and pay attention to before putting paint down!

Donnies the man for sure ! I wish he was closer I would have him do all my work in a heartbeat

Donny needs to start a mobile operation. That way he could come to us and then we couldn't say...I WISH HE WERE CLOSER...LOL
What you think guys?
