Hey guys,

I was in the midst of doing my timing this weekend and it was varying at partial throttle about 5 to 7 degrees. I get some ping at WOT on the highway and decided to check the timing. We took the distributor off and saw some play in there which was attributed to the oil pump drive gear at the bottom of the distributor. The distributor is new rebuilt and is not the problem. My mechanic is very sure that it is the oil pump drive gear. In fact, he even gave me a part number of #1739604 out of a VERY old manual he had in the shop.

I have searched around and see that Milodon sells a brass one for a ton of money (over $130) and before I sheel out that kind of money, I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction?

The motor is a 1969 hi-po 440ci with a stock replacement distributor and Mopar purple shaft .509 lift cam.

Any help or advice would be GREATLY appreciated. I can't seem to track this little bugger down.

hello unless your running a roller cam you do not need the brass gear.i have a brand new m/p oil pump drive gear i will sell you for $45.00 plus shipping that will save you quite abit. it will work in your engine.

The bushing that the gear rides in could be bad too. Pull the gear out and take a look.

I bought a "good running" 440 that had been pulled from a pickup this year...noticed some play in the distributor, then i found play at the drive gear/bushing...the bushing was actually a copper plumbing fitting! It didn't work very well & sent metal through the engine...so a rebuild was in order.
moral of my tale, check that bushing & gear so there isn't any slop.

Thanks guys. 440source sells an extremely affordable gear and bushing which I picked up this weekend.

advance auto parts got mine there for 26 bucks gear and bushing

installed bushing and fit good did not burnish worked perfect good luck

my machine shop guy yelled at me for a cheep one I bought thru a large distributor I thought I was good... It was not hardened correctly and would have eventually spread filings throughout the engine. so much for saving money. finally went with melling around 40 bucks/ just FYI
