What’s purpose of these 2 bolts ?

Not my steering column. I accidentally removed one of these thinking I could easily remove the collar if I did. These two bolts don’t hold anything. Are they just for keeping the bearing encasement in place ? And what’s the easiest method to remove the collar and bearing ? Mine doesn’t have a snap ring, like the one pictured. 1969 Dodge coronet

Nope.....you have to remove the cover plate/screws and the snap ring clamp...

They are kind of important. Just a heads up, the first time you reinstall them, there may be a wth coming out of your mouth. They have to be setting just so to get them to grab.

The bearing is in the column, not the collar.

Isn’t it both? The bearing is behind the plate with Phillips screws, that acts as a retainer along with clip. The outer part of the bearing is housed by the collar and the inner has the column passing through it.

1969 Dodge Coronet. You guys must have different cars than I do. These bolts hold absolutely nothing. Therefore, I still don’t understand their purpose ? I have no screws that hold the collar on. I did find the snap ring. I believe the answer to my question is the snap ring is the only thing that holds it on. This is my actual column.

Well the snap ring keeps the shaft from dropping out of the bearing and column. I do recall those bolts and nuts were necessary - what else would hold the collar in place ???

The snap ring. Im pretty sure now, the bolts just keep the collar from turning side to side. They have a square head on the bolts, I believe this is their purpose. Got, the snap ring off and it’s still not budging. Only thing left holding it on now is the bearing. I just don’t know the best way to pull the collar without breaking it.

The 2 bolts you are asking about hold the top adapter to the column. Take the 2 nuts off and see what happens.......

I did, nothing. Only thing left is to tear the guts out of the bearing and replace it.

I got it, took a gentle pry from behind the collar. There’s a little 2.5” bracket attached to the back. Bracket, bearing, collar come together. If you gently take out the rubber bearing retainer you get enough slip with the collar. Take the collar and bang it toward your chest. It takes time to get the bearing to move. Once it does, your home free. Saved the bearing too, it’s good. Only thing that holds collar on is bearing and snap ring. Bolts just keep collar from spinning. Yeah, me. Lol !

Took these out and when I tried putting them back in there were no threads to bite into.

Yeah, the bolts do infact keep the two housings attached together. Very difficult to reattach them.

The two bolts attach the collar to the tube. The square end of the bolt drops in the slot in the tube.
