440 in my GTX. Alternator bracket doesn't quite make it over to the boss in the water pump housing/ timing cover. I think it's a '75 block, so I assume the housing is of the same vintage?
It's obviously the wrong bracket for the alternator:

It looks like you have a bracket for a 383. Places like 440source sell what you are looking. By the way, the lower bracket goes on the other side of the big bracket.

Ah, but these are those brackets. From the 440source site:

I've got the triangular one turned the right way, don't I?

Oh, by the way, I just noticed it in my own pic - top pivot bolt is loose.:BangHead:
Fixed now.

My bad on the wrong bracket. You have a bracket that is for both a 440 and 383. The side by side holes determine that. The bracket that I was referring to is the narrow one. It mounts behind the triangular one.

UPDATE... You have a waterpump that is to old for that bracket. Notice the area by the neck mounting bolt location. image.jpg

Ok, so apparently this '75 block has a '66-back water pump housing on it.
Go figure...:wtf:

I guess that means I either have to change out the water pump housing or find an alternator bracket for a 64-66?
If so, I reckon I'll try finding the bracket first.
Thanks much for the help!:thankyou:

That's pretty much what I got out of it too. The water pump housing pics are from 440source. On there sight they have a pretty good right up on the years as well. Also the bracket specifies 68 and up.
Good luck!

Well I'll be damned! 35+ years of playing with big blocks and I have never seen or heard of that late housing! Or that bracket. Probably because I'am a pack rat and just rummage through my junk to find what I need. Wonder what else I missed?

Say, you wouldn't just happen to have an alternator bracket for a '67-back big block, would ya? :D

Mystery officially solved. I do indeed have a water pump housing for the 64-66 big block engines (including hemi, apparently):

That means all these wonderful alternator brackets I'm using now (as purchased new from Rick Ehrenberg, no less) are wrong - they're for the more usual "newer" big blocks up thru '74.

What I DO need are these:

They fit all the '64-'66 big block cars without a/c.
Anyone got these they'd be willing to sell?
Yes, I'd be willing to swap as well for what I have now.

I think I'm in for the same problem in the future. I too have that tall thermostat neck pump housing, for my seventy eight 440, that I bought unknowing there was a difference. I'm so glad you posted this for us to read.

Thanks

I appreciate it. I always try to post pics and be informative when I post this stuff, so others that may come along in the future might benefit from my own stumbling along.
With alternator brackets, the year of the engine block doesn't matter. It's all about the water pump housing.
