I use DOT 3, for a few reasons. Silicone based (dot 5) compresses. Leaving a spongy pedal. Though supposedly backward compatible, dot 4 contains different chemicals, which may or may not react with the seals in our cars. I won't get into a discussion about brands. I'm sure many opinions are out there...
I've always used DOT 3, although you can use 4... 4 has a higher temperature boiling point. Do not use 5 silicone-based. As long as the fluid is new, or flushed periodically, as you do coolant or oil, it's fine.
