Is the heads any different on a HP 383 motor as far as valve sizes vs a 290 hp 2 barrel motor. Any difference other than a four barrel dual exhaust and the cam

Depends on year, 516 vs 906 castings.

906 head 2.08 / 1.74 for 383 and 440

906 heads are all the same. The 335HP had double springs for the higher lift cam. the 330 HP didn't, as the cam lift was less. I don't worry about double springs, as I drive mine regularly, and use the 330hp cam.

The 383 engine in the '68 Charger should have 906 heads. Many early 1968 engines have 250 heads. The 250 and 906 heads have the same valve sizes (2.08/1.74) but the ports are very different. I don't think any 906/250 heads came with dual valve springs, maybe single spring with a damper spring, but not dual springs. The 383 2bbl and 4bbl engines have valve springs rated at 208# open with a free standing height of 2.58" and 7-1/2 coils. The 383 HP and 440 4bbl V-8s had a spring rated @ 256# open, a free standing height of 2.31" and 6-1/2 coils.

The 906 heads were used from 68 - 70 on all B and RB, and other than the valve spring difference as pointed out above, they are the same. And the HP engines got single springs with a damper (flat wound spring). For a hot street car these are great heads after some rework.

as iq52 said some 1968 383 2bl came with the 250 heads, mine did.they have no freeze plugs in the ends

SISteve pull a valve cover too, if your in doubt, the casting numbers are on-top of one of the intake port runners inside there, that will tell you exactly which head you have... the last 3 #'s in the casting #, is what everyone is referring to... 250, 906, 915, 346, 158, 213, 902 etc. try, http://www.mymopar.com/index.php?pid=68 , for cylinder head casting #'s 1959-1978
