Wondering what size solid flat tappet cams people are running in their big block strokers .
I am on the fence size wise with my 505 .
I do have Stealth CNC heads and 11:1 comp.
Recommendations are 268-276 on the intake , but I may run out of cylinder head/port size only 250/255 cc intake port
Car is bracket raced plus street driven .
I can get a local custom grind 268/272@050,310/310 advertised , 603/612 lift 012 lash ,108LS
Or have the cam ground single pattern 272/272 lobe
This 310 advertised should be easier on the valve train , than other similar grinds with only 300 advertised

Tex it all depends on what you want to run. My goal was a dependable low 11 sec combo.
The combo is as follows
512 based on a 400 block
Eddy Performer RPM heads(no port work)
11.5 compression
I went with a comp cams extreme energy cam 21-232-4
244/252 duration at .050
Idles at 800 in gear timing set at 34 total(full in at idle)
I could have gone w/a bigger cam but mine is also street strip.
The car weighs 3940 at race weight and has been 11.28 in upper 80's- low 90degree heat and a DA of 3400'. I'm still playing w/the dominator as I know my mph is about
2 mph low.
One reason I went with this cam was it makes plenty of vacuum(18" in gear) if I decide to add power brakes at some point.

Cudatom,
I am aiming for 10.50's
No power brakes or steering .
See signature for where I am now with current 440

Sorry Tex I missed where you already were. You will be very close just by adding the cubes to 505. All my friends as well as myself gained .2 w/the same combo and simply adding the stroker. Some will argue against this but that has been our results.

I have had very good luck w/Hughes cams. In my Cuda at 3500lbs went 10teens at 129mph shifting at 6300. My heads were a little better(Indy SR's cnc'd by modern cylinder head to max wedge size). I ran this cam:

Anyways you are close and should hit your goal pretty easy. Look at Mike Gaines 505 and you can see how well he is running.

Since my name was mentioned (LOL)
My cam:
COMP 23-633-5
.590 Intake .609 Exhaust (PLUS 1.6 rockers added on those specs)
274 Intake / 282 Exhaust both @ .050 duration
108 Lobe Separation
I set lash at .014 (Cold) Intake and .016 (Cold) Exhaust which I think comes out to the cam card spec setting to be .018 (Hot) Intake) and .020 (Hot) Exhaust...I have checked them "hot" and the lash does seem to pretty much "grow" .004 from cold to hot.
I have INDY SEZ (non-Max Wedge Heads, unported that, according to INDY flow 290CFM.
Hooker 1 7/8 Headers with 3" collectors
12.2-1 Compression
Edelbrock Victor 440 #2954 Single Plane Intake with "Super Sucker" CNC Tapered/Open 4150 to 4500 carb adapter
Out of the Box brand new 1050 Dominator with 84 Primary and 5.5 Power Valve and 94 Secondary.
38 degrees timing (all in at 2400) with 110 Race Gas
3640 with me and 5 gal gas
1.46 best 60 foot
10.582 at 126.33 best ET and MPH and runs 10.59 to 10.60 even on "bad" runs.
I know I need to have my heads enlarged to Max Wedge and ported to at least 355CFM and then get 2" Headers with 3 1/2 collectors...and that is what I am saving for. I think with those 2 things (plus a trans-brake..which I also don't have yet) I think the car will then run in the high 10.30s.

Thanks Mike , i had looked to a similar cam . But you have more gear and comp than me . Plus you have dropped your exhaust now ?
I do have a set of Dougs d452 headers in my office , will run a 3"exhaust to diff.
Thanks for your tune specs as well . I am at 22 initial plus 18 all in at 2250 . I do have a modded older 1050 , but will run the hp 1000 prosystem 4150 first
Cudatom , that cam was recommended by Dwayne Porter and Hughes . It is good to hear someone running it with success . Shame they will not give out the advertised duration .
I can get a similar cam cut here in Australia . 268/272@050,.603/.612gross lift .012 lash , 310/310 advertised duration ,108LS,106 ICL . Not sure there will be much difference to the Hughes , may have a slightly higher peak rpm . I think i am starting to step back a little from my initial thoughts .
What were the rest of your combination , motor trans, car
Thanks

Tex

I think you may know my cam already Tex. Its a Dwayne Porter grind as I wanted to make some power and have a good sounding idle but be able to live with it on the street. Dwayne made mine 264 & 270 @ .050 with .585 and .592 lift. Its on a 110 LSA and I run it on a 106 installed centerline. It idles just how I like and works good for my 10.6 comp EZ headed 493. I just wanted to be able to drive to the track and run high 10's and drive home without touching the eng and it met my goal with no trouble. Course it has run 10.70's in street trim through the full exh on pump gas and I see no reason it could not be an easy 10.50 race car if I made it a race only car and took the exh off and went to skinny front tires with an electric waterpump and a Dominator. But it will stay a street car. Course one day I may try more carb then my 850 DP. Ron

The cam I put in my 512 is small, but it is a street strip car with OD, AC,
248 @ .050 have not made it to the track yet, put sticky drag radials on & hurt the 8 3/4 , ordered a new S60 from DR diff.

CDR , I know that feeling . Got Dr Diff to supply my S60 a few years ago

Tex,
With the my cam (as shown in previous post) and with my 1050 Dominator my car is quite docile on the "street". I drove it 30 miles round trip ( 1/2 city and 1/2 hiway) to a car show 2 weeks ago and it was fine....but I DO NOT HAVE POWER STEERING OR BRAKES...that might require some vacuum, or whatever that stuff is that is required to have power accessories....lol.
Just wanted to let you know.

thanks Mike
Mine is my daily driver .It is a 35-40 mile drive to the dragstrip . Early this year I drove it 10 hours interstate to race and home . Done this a few times. no power accessories any more .
Tex

572 Hemi. 283@ 0.50 on both intake and exhaust. .660 or so lift intake and .680 exhaust...if I recall correctly.

thanks Mike

Tex....10 hours on an interstate to race....wow...you are a brave soul and I applaud your courage and confidence in your ride. Mike

Ron ,
I have been chasing you for a while . I hope to catch you yet .

My engine builder picked a Comp Cam solid with .597 intake, .592 exhaust, 259* intake, 268* @ .050. I now have 1.5 rockers, but I'm sure I'll be going to 1.6 rockers. It makes good power with the 1.5 rockers. 512 inch 692 HP.

The 268/272 cam looks pretty good, I might move it to a 110 LS being its a street car. I'm guessing the lift is with 1.5 ratio?

the 268/272 with .591/ .600 net lift ? Yes that is with 1.5 rocker . I could always go 1.6 on intake - with some more grinding , if I can get some Crane gold 1.6 for them
The 2 cams I have run in my 440 were 108 , idle quality isn't a big deal plus I need it to punch early

Hey 66,
What is the rest of your engine build specs ?
Thanks

Tex I think you will soon as I have no plans for any changes to my car in the next few years. I need to get bills paid off in the next few years before I can spend any play money. I did forget to say that I do still run my stock power brakes and I guess since my booster is a good size one as you can see here it stores enough vacum that the power brakes work ok. If I have to hit them a few times in a row then it starts to bleed the vacum out before it builds enough back up. But as soon as I am on tha gas a few seconds it builds vacum back up. They work ok but I am aware that if I am on them alot and hit the brakes a few times in a row the pedal will start to get a little harder. Ron
