Hi, just picked up a "73 RR. side.JPGfront.JPGrear.JPG Not too bad a looker...although it came from 2000 ft alt. and came up to 6200 ft alt. It needs carb work for the non air up here around Denver but...it has a Summit Racing carb on it. Can anyone tell me what is the original carb for a 1973 RR 400 ci 260 hp stock motor? This car has a 4 speed manual trans but I don't know what gears are in it yet.
I just may need to purchase another carb cause I don't know how to tune this carb I can't find any info on.
Thanks for looking and any help you could give me.
Dennis

A Thermoquad. The exact part number I can find later when I'm home.

Nice ride. You will have only the 3rd known 73 that is red in northern Colorado. Mine is in full restoration and have had it for 30 years. A friend has a survivor car with 83k on the clock, and he has had it for 37 years. Both of ours are 340 cars.

Thanks to all, yeh I wanted one of these when I was a youngster but never could get one cause I didn't have the money. Well, I got one, (don't you know it...for the wife, she wanted it), but a great excuse to get one.
So would you go back to the Thermoquad or what would you substitute for it these days? I am not really sure about this Summit carb I am looking at.

Actually a Thermoquad wqs a really good carburator. I think it is right up their with Rochester carb. Reliable easy to set up ran for ever with little trouble.

Thermoquads work well in these cars if you set them up right to begin with. Read up on them so you know what to do when the time comes. Rebuild kits are still readily available

I've got them in the 73 Road Runner and my 73 Town&Country no issues. Just keep them clean and lean.

You still have the original intake manifold on that 400?

Also post more pictures.... We live for them around here!

I heard many great stories about thermoquads and would like to get one. I just ordered the manual for the car so I will read up on them. For now, can you suggest a model? Can I use a carb for a 400 ci A/T even though I have a manual tranny? There are many on ebay, but which one for my engine? I will get a pic of the engine bay and post it next time.

That number is few and far..
Might have to get one from another year unless you get lucky.

Yeh, I think I will pick one up that is close to the original if I can't find one and rebuild it.
Thanks to all for the suggestions. BTW, the manifold is the original as is most of the car.

The manual carb Probably has a heavier pump shot over the auto carb. Maybe a slightly richer jetting. Maybe?

I like the TQ's but there are a few do's and dont's.

First, use the thick OE gasket for heat control to the carb.
To much heat will crack the phenolic resin bowl.
As said above, you must take the time to set the carb up right. Many minor adjustments must be checked and tweaked. Then You can proceed to fine tuning it. If need be.

The problems with TQ,s are replacement parts. While you can get many, you may not be able to get them all. E-bay is a good place to search for stuff.

There is a member here by the screen name Demonsizzler that does a wonderful
Job rebuilding and modifying TQ's. he is located in Ga.

IMO, the TQ is the best street strip OE surplied carb. I myself run them when I can. Excellent throttle response with the small primary side and excellent W.O.T. Performance with those huge tunable secondaries.

While it may lack super tune abilty and a few top end HP ponies next to a Holley, these carbs are rock steady for years in being reliable and repeatable without constant fiddling.

I normally find TQ's very cheaply and spend some time with them and a new rebuild kit. Way back when I first started messin around with them (some 20 years ago) I'd spend $20 for a core, $30 for a kit and end up having a killer street carb for 1/4 the price of a new one.

Now if I can only find and rebuild them that cheaply again! There still inexpensive now though.

I agree, I was a holley guy for years then changed to Eddys (overworked Carters). Well, many friends had TQs and they loved them...I guess it is my turn to try them out. I will look around. Thanks for the screen name. Might need to touch base with them.

I picked up a 6322S that was remanufactured last year. I couldnt find the 6319, which is the one for my 340, but the 6322 should work, its bigger, but i am bumping up the performance on my motor.
